Removing and installing rear brake cable, torsion beam rear axle — VW

Removing and installing rear brake cable, torsion beam rear axle on VW: 24 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Swapping a rear handbrake cable on a torsion beam rear axle, for the platform codes listed below, is a cable-routing job more than a brake job. The cable unhooks from the lever on the rear caliper and its bracket at the wheel end, then the centre console comes out so you can back off the adjustment nut and free the cable from the compensator. Underneath, it is released from the retainer and guide tube on the axle and drawn rearwards out of the guide bush. What decides the result is seating: the guide tube and seal must sit properly, the cable must go in at its marking, and both locking lugs at the caliper bracket must click home before you pretension and set the parking brake.

24 steps

🧭 Before you start

With the wheel off and the handbrake released, unhook the cable at the caliper lever and squeeze the lugs to free it from the bracket. Remove the centre console, slacken the adjustment nut and detach the cable from the compensator, then release it from the axle retainer, guide tube and guide bush. Fit the new cable from behind, clip the retainer back, attach at the marking and reconnect both ends, then pretension and adjust the parking brake.

Fits: platform codes AU1, BX5

Don't miss

  • Clip the axle retainer back on and pull on it to prove it is firmly seated.
  • Attach the cable to the retainer at its marking and push it into the wire hook.
  • Push the cable through the caliper bracket until both locking lugs engage.
  • Check the guide tubes and seal are correctly seated before pretensioning with the adjustment nut.
  • Finish by adjusting the parking brake; pretension alone is not the final setting.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
