Removing and installing rear axle, front-wheel drive, only Passat GTE — VW

Removing and installing rear axle, front-wheel drive, only Passat GTE on VW: 29 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Dropping the rear axle on the Passat GTE, the plug-in hybrid version of the Passat B8 (3G), is a subframe job with a twist: the car is nose-light once the axle starts coming down, so it has to be strapped to the lift before anything structural is loosened. Wheels come off, the ABS and parking brake motor connectors are unplugged, the level sender is freed from the transverse link and the springs removed. Calipers are hung up with the lines still attached, the rear silencer and heat shield come off, and the fuel tank is held with tensioning belts before the subframe bolts are removed. What decides it is marking the mounting bracket position on the body before unbolting, and lowering slowly while watching the brake lines and wiring.

29 steps

🧭 Before you start

Raise the car, remove the wheels and disconnect the ABS sensors, parking brake motors and level sender, then take out the springs. Hang the brake calipers on the body, remove the rear silencer and any underbody cladding, strap the car to the lift and lower the heat shield. Support the fuel tank with tensioning belts, fix the subframe position, mark the mounting brackets and remove the bolts. Lower the subframe a maximum of 30 mm, unclip the brake line and lower it fully, then check whether wheel alignment is needed after refitting.

Fits: VW Passat B8 (3G, 2014–)

Don't miss

  • Strap the vehicle to the lift with T10038 before removing the subframe bolts; it can slip off otherwise.
  • Mark the mounting bracket position on the body so the axle goes back where it was.
  • Don't open the brake lines; tie the calipers to the body with the lines connected.
  • The brake line clips break on removal and must be renewed.
  • Lower the subframe only 30 mm at first, then unclip the brake line before going further.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
