Removing and installing fuel gauge sender G (Golf, Golf Plus) — VW
Removing and installing fuel gauge sender G (Golf, Golf Plus) on VW: 9 steps, engines BLG, BMY. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
The fuel gauge sender G clips onto the side of the fuel delivery unit in the tank, so on the Golf V and Golf Plus (codes 1K1 and 5M1, here with the BLG and BMY petrol engines) the delivery unit has to come out of the tank before you can touch it. Once the unit is on the bench the sender is pulled slightly sideways and upwards together; if it will not release, the retaining tabs are eased aside as well. Three small connectors link it to the unit, and they are colour-coded. The job is short, but it hinges on two things: noting which coloured wire goes where before unplugging, and making sure the locking devices of those connectors actually hold when they go back on.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the fuel delivery unit from the tank. Slide the sender sideways and up off its guide, pushing the retaining tabs aside if needed, note the cable colours and unplug the three connectors. Refit by reconnecting the connectors in the same colour order, checking each by pulling, then pressing the sender down into the guide on the delivery unit until it engages. Refit the delivery unit.
Fits: VW Golf V / Jetta (1K, 2003–2009); platform code 5M1
Don't miss
- Note the colour coordination of the three cables before pulling the connectors off.
- Bend the connector locking devices back after release so they grip again on refitting.
- Pull-test every connector once reconnected.
- Press the sender down until it audibly engages in the guide on the delivery unit.
- Fuel vapour is present with the delivery unit out; work ventilated, away from sparks, as normal practice.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
