Removing and installing fuel delivery unit/fuel gauge sender, vehicles with union nut — VW
Removing and installing fuel delivery unit/fuel gauge sender, vehicles with union nut on VW: 23 steps, engines CHYA, CHYB, DAFA.
Removing the fuel delivery unit and gauge sender on versions secured by a union nut rather than a locking ring, platform code listed below, with engines CHYA, CHYB and DAFA. With the tank drained and the battery earth disconnected, the rear bench comes out, the cover is unclipped with a removal wedge, the connector unplugged and the fuel lines released after letting the pressure off with a cloth around the joint. The union nut is undone with tool 3217, the sealing flange lifted and the old seal removed, then the unit eased out without bending the float arm. A new seal goes in dry and is coated on its inner side with fuel, and the flange must be pressed down against its spring into the correct position before the nut is tightened.
🧭 Before you start
Drain the tank, disconnect the battery earth and remove the rear bench and access cover. Unplug the connector, release fuel pressure and disconnect the line, then open the union nut with the special tool and withdraw the unit with care. Check the tank for dirt, fit a new seal dry and wet its inner face with fuel, refit the unit, press the flange into position and tighten the nut, then reconnect and pull-test the lines.
Fits: platform code 121
- Opens: fuel
- Renewed: seal
Don't miss
- The fuel line is under pressure; wear eye protection and wrap a cloth around the joint.
- Do not bend the sender float arm on the way out or in.
- Renew the seal; insert it dry, then coat its inner side with fuel.
- Press the flange down against spring force into its installation position before tightening the union nut.
- Look into the tank for dirt or debris while it is open.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
