Removing and installing front seat belts: VW Golf Cabriolet
Step-by-step removing and installing front seat belts for the VW Golf Cabriolet: 15 steps, 9 torque figures.
Removing and refitting the front seat belts on the platform code listed below. Belt tensioners are pyrotechnic, so follow the airbag and tensioner safety rules throughout. With the ignition on, the battery is disconnected, then the sill strip, belt anchor rail cover, rear bench seat and side trim come out to expose the inertia reel on the B-pillar. The belt and tongue are threaded back through the anchor, and the tensioner igniter connector is released with a small screwdriver after you have discharged static by touching the body. The anchor rail comes off its two bolts at 4.5 Nm and the reel off its bolt at 40 Nm. Lay no wiring in the belt wind-up area, and make sure nobody is in the car when the battery is reconnected.
🧭 Before you start
Switch on the ignition, disconnect the battery and remove the sill strip, anchor rail cover, bench seat and side trim. Thread the belt through the anchor, discharge static, unplug the tensioner igniter, remove the anchor rail (4.5 Nm) and unbolt the reel (40 Nm). Refit the reel on the B-pillar, then install in reverse, keeping wiring out of the wind-up area, and reconnect the battery with ignition on and the car empty.
Fits: VW Golf Cabriolet (517, 2011–2016)
Don't miss
- Touch the body to discharge static before unplugging the tensioner igniter.
- The belt guide must audibly engage in its body tab on refit.
- Inertia reel bolt 40 Nm; anchor rail bolts 4.5 Nm.
- Reconnect the battery with ignition on and nobody in the car.
- Keep wiring clear of the belt wind-up area.

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 4.5 Nm (3.3 lb-ft) | Undo the 2 bolts |
| 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) | Remove bolt (1 |
| 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) | Remove bolt (2 |
| 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) | Remove bolt (3 |
| 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) | Undo and remove bolt (1 |
| 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) | Undo bolt (1 |
| 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) | Unscrew bolt (1 |
| 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) | ⚠ When installing, belt guide (1) must audibly engage in body tab (2)! — Remove bolt (1 |
| 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) | ⚠ When installing, belt guide (1) must audibly engage in tab (2)! — Remove bolt (1 |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Observe general safety regulations when working on airbag, belt tensioner and battery isolator units (pyrotechnic components) .It is important to follow the special instructions for belt tensioners . — Switch on ignition.
- Disconnect vehicle battery Electrical system27Disconnecting and reconnecting battery.
- Remove sill strip .
- Remove belt anchor rail .
- Remove bench seat .
- Remove side trim .
- Unclip and remove cover (2) of belt anchor (arrow).
- Thread cover and belt strap (3) together with belt tongue through belt anchor (1).
- ⚠ Electrostatic discharges may result in unintentional triggering of belt tensioner. Therefore, the mechanic must electrostatically discharge him/herself before disconnecting the igniter and earth wires. This can be done by briefly touching the body or striker plate of the door. — Release connector locking device (3) using a small screwdriver and pull electrical connector for belt tensioner igniter (2) off.
- Undo the 2 bolts (4.5 Nm) and remove belt anchor rail (4). — 4.5 Nm (3.3 lb-ft)
- Undo bolt (1) (40 Nm) and remove belt inertia reel (5) from mounting. — 40 Nm (30 lb-ft)
- Fit belt inertia reel on B-pillar.
- Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
- ⚠ Make sure that no electrical wiring is laid in the belt wind-up area! — Switch on ignition.
- ⚠ Battery must be connected with ignition switched on. If pyrotechnical components (e.g. airbag, seat belt tensioners) are repaired incorrectly, undesired triggering may occur after connecting battery. Ensure that nobody is in vehicle when connecting battery. — Reconnect vehicle battery Electrical system27Disconnecting and reconnecting battery.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
