Removing and installing front 3-point seat belt: VW Passat B8

Step-by-step removing and installing front 3-point seat belt for the VW Passat B8: 18 steps, 9 torque figures.

Removing the front three-point seat belt on the Passat B8 (3G) means handling a pyrotechnic belt tensioner, so the preparation is as important as the spanner work. On Passat GTE vehicles the high-voltage maintenance connector is disconnected first; then the battery earth cable is disconnected with the ignition on. The lower B-pillar trim, belt end anchor and belt guide come off, the belt anchor is unbolted, and after discharging yourself on the door striker the igniter connector is released with a small screwdriver. The inertia reel is then unbolted (with a spreader rivet on some versions) and lifted out. On refit the anti-rotation tab must engage in the mounting and the igniter connector must be locked fully home. The battery is reconnected with the ignition on and nobody inside the car.

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the GTE high-voltage maintenance connector where fitted, then the battery earth with ignition on. Remove B-pillar trim, belt end anchor, belt guide and anchor bolt, discharge yourself, unplug the tensioner igniter and unbolt the inertia reel. Refit with the anti-rotation tab engaged, connect and lock the igniter connector, then reconnect the battery with ignition on and the cabin empty, and reconnect the GTE maintenance connector.

Fits: VW Passat B8 (3G, 2014–)

Don't miss

  • Touch the door striker to discharge yourself before unplugging or plugging the igniter connector.
  • The inertia reel's anti-rotation tab must engage in its mounting before the bolt is tightened.
  • Press the connector lock in fully; it seats and locks the igniter connector in one movement.
  • Reconnect the battery with ignition on and nobody in the vehicle.
  • Pyrotechnic parts follow their own storage and disposal rules; general practice is to keep removed tensioners face-up, away from heat.

  1. Remove bolt (1).
  2. Remove belt anchor (2) with belt webbing.
  3. ⚠ Before handling pyrotechnical components (e.g. separating the electrical connector), the person handling them must "“electrically discharge”" himself. To do this e.g. briefly touch the door striker plate. — Release connector locking device (arrow) using a small screwdriver and pull off connector for seat belt tensioner igniter 1 (item 1).
  4. Unscrew bolt (3) and remove belt inertia reel (2) from mounting.
  5. Release and pull off connectors (2) and (5).
  6. Remove spreader rivet (1).
  7. Unscrew bolt (4), and remove belt inertia reel (3) from mounting.
  8. ⚠ Observe safety instructions for pyrotechnic components .Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. connecting the electrical connector), the person handling them must ensure that he/she is "“electrically discharged”". To do this e.g. briefly touch the door striker plate. — If parts of the belt system are removed because of an accident, the belt system bolts must be renewed. [Note: Ensure that the electrical connectors are pushed fully onto stop and engage audibly.]
  9. Fit belt inertia reel ensuring that anti-rotation tab (1) engages in mounting (2)(arrow) and tighten bolt.
  10. Connect connector (1) to igniter (arrow A).
  11. Press in connector lock (2)(arrow B). Doing so, the connector will be fully inserted into igniter and locked at the same time.
  12. ⚠ Battery must be connected with ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag, seat belt tensioners) are repaired incorrectly, undesired triggering may occur after the battery is connected. Ensure that nobody is in vehicle when connecting battery. — On "“Passat GTE vehicles”", connect maintenance connector for high-voltage systemTW.
  13. Connect battery earth cable with ignition switched on Electrical system27Battery; Connecting and disconnecting battery.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
