Removing and installing emission control module, version 2 — VW

Removing and installing emission control module, version 2 on VW: 46 steps, engines CUVA, CUVC, CUVE, CUWA.

Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

46 steps 4 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Fits: VW Tiguan I (5N, 2007–2016), VW CC (358, 2012–2017), VW Sharan II / SEAT Alhambra (7N, 2010–)

  • Opens: coolant
  • Renewed: self-locking nuts

Don't miss

  • The position of the engine may need to be modified using engine support T10533 in order to allow for removing the particulate filter and to avoid any collisions with components (e.g. ABS control unit).
  • Make sure that the compensation elements (arrow) are free to move.
  • Clean threads which do not move easily, and moisten them with rust remover if necessary.
  • Insert bolt (2), and press it in until it engages. Do not tighten or turn bolt.

📋 Procedure

  1. ⚠ When working on exhaust system:Observe safety precautions when working on the exhaust system . — Remove noise insulation General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
  2. Remove subframe Running gear, axles, steering40Subframe; Removing and installing subframe with steering gear.
  3. Remove front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter .
  4. Drain coolant .
  5. Unscrew bolt (4) and turn filler neck for washer fluid reservoir (2) towards front.

  1. Open clip (3) and pull connector (5) off coolant expansion tank (1).
  2. Unscrew bolts (arrows), and move coolant expansion tank (1) to one side (hoses remain attached).
  3. Remove exhaust gas temperature sender on emission control module .
  4. Remove Lambda probe 1 before catalytic converterGX10.
  5. Open heat insulation sleeve (1).
  6. Remove connector (5) from retainer, release it, and pull it off.
  7. Lay wire to one side.
  8. Release and pull off connectors (3) and (4).
  9. Lay wire to one side.
  10. Remove bolt (2).
  11. If fitted, pull off vacuum hose (arrow), and lay it to one side.
  12. Remove bolt (3).
  13. Release hose clips (1) and detach hoses.
  14. Unclip pipe (2) and remove it together with pressure differential senders.
  15. Open clip (1), and position it on intake funnel of particulate filter.
  16. Unscrew nut (1) and bolts (2). Remove bracket (3).
  17. Unbolt right drive shaft (arrow) from gearbox Running gear, axles, steering40Drive shaft; Removing and installing drive shaft, and tie it up towards rear.
  18. Remove coolant pipe (rear) .
  19. Fit engine support T10533 as shown in illustration, and tighten bolts by hand. Bolt (1) = original bolt for pendulum support.
  20. Push engine and gearbox as far as possible towards front by turning spindle. Avoid collisions with other components.
  21. Remove exhaust gas recirculation cooler .
  22. Open and remove clip (1).
  23. Unscrew nuts (1), and loosen bolts (2) 1/4 turn. [Note: The position of the engine may need to be modified using engine support T10533 in order to allow for removing the particulate filter and to avoid any collisions with components (e.g. ABS control unit).]
  24. Push particulate filter upwards out of bracket, and remove it downwards. [Note: The exhaust gas recirculation filter is secured to the engine with a compensation element. This compensation element is provided with a left-hand thread on the outside. When bolting on the emission control module, the compensation element (2) initially follows bolt (1) due to the friction on retainer tabs (3). Due to the left-hand thread the compensation element travels towards the bolt head, although the bolt is turned in clockwise direction, and thus compensates the play between the components. The left-hand thread of the compensation element must be able to be turned easily. Otherwise the retainer tabs cannot provide the required friction for the compensation element to follow the bolt. In order not to reduce friction ensure that no grease or oil gets on the retainer tabs.] [Note: Renew self-locking nuts and bolts as well as gaskets, seals and O-rings after each removal.Secure all hose connections with the same type of hose clips as original equipment Electronic Parts Catalogue.Fit all cable ties in the original position when installing.]
  25. ⚠ The exhaust gas recirculation filter must be installed free of tension to avoid risk of stress fractures and engine damage.Ensure that the compensation element moves easily and that it is not seated too firmly.Compensation element must turn easily on its threads.Only lubricate the thread. The retainer tabs must remain »clean«.The retainer tabs for the bolt must be bent together so that when the bolt is screwed in, the compensation element is screwed in as well. — Unscrew bolts (2) and (3), and remove exhaust gas recirculation filter (1).
  26. Make sure that the compensation elements (arrow) are free to move.
  27. Unscrew compensation element completely by turning it in clockwise direction (left-hand thread).
  28. Clean threads which do not move easily, and moisten them with rust remover if necessary.
  29. ⚠ Ensure that no lubricant gets on the retainer tabs of the compensation element. If the friction is reduced, functional impairment of the compensation elements will be the result. — Adapt retainer tabs to correct dimension using calibration tool T10512 as follows:
  30. Slide compensation element onto shaft of calibration tool, and insert it into centring sleeve.
  31. Bend the retainer tabs back with light blows on the ball head using your hand.
  32. Screw in compensation elements completely by hand and then loosen them again by 45°.
  33. Position exhaust gas recirculation filter (1) on bracket.
  34. Insert bolt (2), and press it in until it engages. Do not tighten or turn bolt.
  35. Tighten bolt (3) by hand, and immediately loosen it again by 90°.
  36. Fit new seal to centring piece of intake funnel on particulate filter.
  37. Push new clamp over intake funnel.
  38. Fit new seal to connecting piece for exhaust gas recirculation filter on particulate filter.
  39. Push new clamp over output funnel.
  40. Insert particulate filter from above so that studs are inserted into lower bracket.
  41. The tightening sequence is specified in the following table: .

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
