Removing and installing electric hinged tow coupling attachment button E474 — VW
Removing and installing electric hinged tow coupling attachment button E474 on VW: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
On the VW Passat B7 (362/365, 2010–2014) the button for the electrically swung-out towbar, E474, is in the right-hand side trim of the luggage compartment, beside the boot light. It is removed from behind: switch the ignition off, take out the luggage compartment light, and reach through that mounting hole with your fingers to push the button's catch in. The button then swings out of the trim from the left side, the connector is released and it comes away. There is little that can go wrong apart from trim damage, so mask off the trim around the button with tape before levering anything. Fitting is the reverse; check the towbar swings out and back in on the button before handing the car back.
🧭 Before you start
Switch off the ignition, mask the trim around the button and remove the luggage compartment light in the right-hand side trim. Reach through the light opening, press the catch on E474 and swing the button out from the left side. Release and disconnect the connector and remove the button. Refit in reverse and check the tow coupling operation.
Fits: VW Passat B7 saloon (362, 2010–2014), VW Passat B7 Variant (365, 2010–2014)

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
