Removing and installing drive shaft, right drive shaft, constant velocity joints VL100 and VL107, except for e-Golf — VW
Removing and installing drive shaft, right drive shaft, constant velocity joints VL100 and VL107, except for e-Golf on VW: 19 steps, 1 torque figure.
On the Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020) and Golf VII Variant (BA5), the right drive shaft with VL100 or VL107 joints comes out by separating the suspension at the swivel joint and pressing the shaft out of the hub. The anti-roll bar coupling rod, any vehicle level sender bracket and the heat shield are detached, the shaft is unbolted from the gearbox flange, and the strut is swung outwards while the shaft is pressed through, using the press tool bolted on with wheel bolts. The bearing protection rule matters most: once the hub bolt is loosened, the car must not stand on that wheel bearing. If it has to be moved without the shaft, an outer joint has to be fitted and tightened to 120 Nm.
🧭 Before you start
Loosen the hub bolt with the car on the ground, then raise it, remove the wheel and noise insulation. Detach the coupling rod, level sender bracket and heat shield, unbolt the shaft from the gearbox flange and separate the suspension link from the swivel joint. Swing the strut out and press the shaft from the hub with the press tool in the specified sequence. Refit in reverse, tighten the swivel joint nuts unladen and carry out the level sender basic setting if fitted.
Fits: VW Golf VII Variant (BA), VW Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020); platform code BE1
Don't miss
- Do not load the wheel bearing once the hub bolt is loosened; never more than 90° with the car on its wheels.
- To move the car without a shaft, fit an outer joint and tighten it to 120 Nm.
- Do not let the drive shaft hang free on its joints.
- Tighten the swivel joint nuts with the suspension in unladen state.
- Level sender lever faces outwards; thread in the outer hole, lug in the inner hole, then run basic settings.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ When removing and installing drive shafts, do not allow them to hang free and stop against joints due to excessive bending. — Remove bolt for drive shaft .
- ⚠ Wheel bearings must not be subjected to load after bolt securing drive shaft to wheel hub has been loosened. If wheel bearings are loaded with weight of vehicle, bearing will be damaged. This reduces the service life of the wheel bearing. It is not permissible to loosen drive shaft bolt more than 90° if vehicle is standing on its wheels.Do not attempt to move the vehicle without the drive shafts fitted as this would damage the wheel bearing. If a vehicle nevertheless has to be moved, comply with the following:Install an outer joint instead of the drive shaft.Tighten outer joint to 120 Nm. — Loosen wheel bolts. — 120 Nm (89 lb-ft)
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove wheel.
- Remove noise insulation General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
- Unscrew nut (1) from coupling rod (3).
- Pull coupling rod (3) out of anti-roll bar (2).
- Unscrew nut (1).
- Pull bracket (2) for front left vehicle level sender G78 and/or for front right vehicle level sender G289 out of suspension link (3), as applicable
- If fitted, remove bolts (1) and detach heat shield (2).
- Unbolt drive shaft from gearbox flange.
- Unscrew nuts (arrows) on swivel joint.
- Detach suspension link from swivel joint.
- Swivel suspension strut outwards and at the same time press drive shaft out of wheel bearing unit.
- To be able to press out drive shaft (3), secure press tool T10520(1) to wheel hub using 3 wheel bolts (2).
- It is essential to follow specified sequence. [Note: At the end of the procedure or for pressing out drive shaft further the spindle must be moved to its original position in order to deploy the hydraulic force!]
- Remove drive shaft.
- Tighten nuts (arrows). [Note: Tighten the nuts (arrows) in unladen state .] [Note: Lever on vehicle level sender must face towards outside of vehicle.Thread of vehicle level sender must be screwed into outer hole in suspension link. Retaining lug for vehicle level sender must engage in inner hole in order to guarantee correct installation position.]
- On vehicles with vehicle level sender, carry out basic settings for wheel damper electronics .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
