Removing and installing data bus diagnostic interface J533, right-hand drive — VW
Removing and installing data bus diagnostic interface J533, right-hand drive on VW: 9 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
On right-hand-drive VW Sharan II and SEAT Alhambra (2010 onwards) the data bus diagnostic interface J533, the gateway, is mounted behind the glove compartment, which is the only access work involved. With the ignition off and the key out, the glove compartment is removed, the connector on the gateway is released and pulled, the securing pins are squeezed together and the unit is released from its bracket and lifted off its suspension point. Refitting has an order to it: the gateway engages on the suspension point first, then the securing pin is pushed into the bracket. It is a small unit, but it is the car's network hub, so a connector that is not fully home shows up as a car full of faults rather than a single one.
🧭 Before you start
Switch off the ignition and remove the key, then take out the glove compartment. Release connector (3) on the data bus diagnostic interface, press the securing pins together, free the unit from its bracket and detach it from the suspension point. On installation, engage the unit on the suspension point first and only then engage the securing pin in the bracket.
Fits: VW Sharan II / SEAT Alhambra (7N, 2010–)
Don't miss
- Ignition off and key out before the connector is touched.
- Refit order: suspension point first, then the securing pin into the bracket.
- Press the securing pins together to release; do not lever the housing.
- Push the connector fully home and check for stored faults afterwards; a loose gateway plug throws faults across the car.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
