Removing and installing cover and padding, backrest — VW

Removing and installing cover and padding, backrest on VW: 28 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Taking the cover and padding off the rear backrest on the 138 platform listed below is mostly a trim-removal exercise before the upholstery work begins. The bench seat comes out, then the luggage floor covering, rear belt buckle, lock carrier trim, rear shelf supports, luggage compartment side trim, roof end strip, C-pillar and side trims and finally the rear backrest itself. On the backrest, the release mechanism trims are unclipped with removal wedge 3409 while the release button is held forward, the cover beading is freed from its clamping profiles, the remaining trims released, and the Velcro and zips opened. The cover is held to the frame by upholstery clips that have to be cut; they cannot be reused, so new clips and clip pliers V.A.G 1634 are needed for refitting.

28 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the bench seat and the surrounding luggage compartment and pillar trims, then the backrest. Unclip the release mechanism trims, free the cover beading from the clamping profiles and remove the remaining trims. Open the Velcro and zips, fold the cover back, cut through the upholstery clips and lift the cover and padding off the frame.

Fits: platform code 138

Don't miss

  • Never push the backrest down onto the centre mounting; place foam between them to protect the covers.
  • Hold the release button forwards while prising the trim off with wedge 3409.
  • Upholstery clips are destroyed on removal; fit new ones with pliers V.A.G 1634.
  • Start unclipping at the rear lower right of the trim to avoid breaking tabs.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
