Removing and installing brake master cylinder, LHD — VW

Removing and installing brake master cylinder, LHD on VW: 25 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Renewing the brake master cylinder on left-hand-drive cars with the platform codes listed below. On these cars the cylinder is buried under the air intake and battery, so the engine cover panel, battery, air filter, intake hose and battery tray all come out first, with the openings sealed by bungs. Fluid is drawn from the reservoir with the filling and bleeding unit, the clutch master cylinder feed hose is clamped and detached, the reservoir lifted off, and the brake lines capped with sealing plugs before the nuts are undone. What decides the job is keeping brake fluid away from mineral oils and paint, and making sure the booster plunger rod engages the new cylinder correctly before the system is bled.

25 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the engine cover panel, battery, air filter, intake hose and battery tray, sealing the openings. Lay cloths down, draw off brake fluid, clamp and detach the clutch supply hose, unplug the level warning and brake light switch connectors and lift off the reservoir. Disconnect and plug the brake lines, undo the nuts and remove the cylinder. Fit the new one with the plunger rod seated, reinstall the battery and bleed the brake system.

Fits: platform code AJ5

  • Opens: brake fluid

Don't miss

  • Never let brake fluid contact oil, petrol or cleaning agents; mineral oils damage the seals.
  • Drawn-off brake fluid is not reused; dispose of it under local environmental rules.
  • Plug the brake lines immediately after disconnecting to keep dirt and moisture out.
  • Check the booster plunger rod is properly positioned in the master cylinder before tightening the nuts.
  • The system must be fully bled afterwards, including the clutch circuit if its supply hose was disturbed.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
