Removing and installing bearing housing with right-hand output shaft/drive flange — VW
Removing and installing bearing housing with right-hand output shaft/drive flange on VW: factory workshop procedure. Full factory text, tools and checks.
Workshop procedure for VW — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
ℹ️ Torque figures below come verbatim from workshop data — always cross-check against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening.
(gearbox installed)
Removing
Remove right-hand drive shaft as follows:
Note:
The illustration shows the left-hand side of the vehicle.
Fit support device 3250, with the vehicle in an unloaded condition, to both sides before the vehicle is raised to enable the left-hand drive shaft (illustration) and the left and right-hand shock absorber/anti-roll bar coupling link to be removed.
Installation position:
Support device bearing surface (arrow A) must be located below the upper wishbone -1-.
The V-shape opening (arrow B) bears on the assembly carrier -2-.
With vehicle standing on its wheels loosen right-hand drive shaft/wheel hub bolt and wheel securing bolts.
Lift vehicle.
Remove insulation tray below engine/gearbox, if fitted.
Remove bolt for right-hand shock absorber/anti-roll bar coupling rod.
Push shock absorber completely together.
Unbolt drive shaft from flange.
Remove wheel.
Separate right-hand lower wheel bearing housing swivel joint bolted connection, thereby support swivel joint, e.g. with gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A so that it does not drop down quickly.
Take drive shaft out.
Unbolt gearbox carrier -A- from engine block and mounting housing -B-.
Place drip tray underneath.
Pull drive flange/output shaft out of locating device in differential with press piece VW 434 and hexagon bolt -A- (M10 x 75).
Remove speedometer drive shaft.
Remove speedometer drive:
Unbolt guide sleeve (arrow A) and take out speedometer drive (arrow B).
Unbolt bearing housing from gearbox and press off, then remove together with output shaft/flange shaft to do this press engine/gearbox unit slightly forwards if required.
Gearbox to 09 08 2
Note:
The removal of gearboxes to 09 08 2 is only possible if there is a hole in the console in the area of arrow -A-.
Remove rear gearbox mounting with console (arrow -A- and -B-).
Installing
Install in reverse order, when doing this, always renew the O-ring to seal the bearing housing with the clutch housing.
Note:
Drive drive flange/output shaft in with a synthetic head hammer. First: replace securing ring -A-.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
