Removing and installing axle beam — VW
Removing and installing axle beam on VW: 39 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Taking out the rear torsion beam axle on the platform codes listed below (5C1, 5C7) involves the interior as well as the underside, because the handbrake cables are freed at the compensator under the centre armrest. After that the car is raised, the wheels removed and the body strapped with T10038, and the trailing arms are checked. The rear level sender G76 is unclipped, the coil springs are compressed and removed, and the beam is supported on jack V.A.G 1383 A. Brake lines and hoses, handbrake cables and the shock absorber bolts are released before the beam is lowered. Marking the right-hand mounting bracket bolt positions before removal and tightening the axle only in the unladen position are what keep the alignment right.
🧭 Before you start
Slacken the handbrake cables inside the car, fit the pedal depressor, then raise the car, remove wheels and strap the body. Unclip G76, remove the coil springs, support the beam and disconnect brake lines, hoses and handbrake cables. Mark and remove the mounting bracket bolts, unbolt the shock absorbers and lower the beam. On refitting, engage G76 correctly, tighten the axle unladen, bleed the brakes, adjust the parking brake and refit the wheels.
Fits: platform codes 5C7, 5C1
- Opens: brake fluid
- Special tools named: VAS 241, VAS 801, spring compressor
Don't miss
- Mark the bolt positions on the right-hand mounting bracket before removing them.
- Strap the axle to the jack when lowering; it is heavy and unbalanced.
- A new rear axle also needs its axle beam plates fitted.
- Seat level sender G76 in its lug and hear its flap click into the lower part.
- Tighten the rear axle in the unladen position, then bleed the brakes and adjust the parking brake.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
