Timing belt replacement: VW Polo4 1.0 (ARA)

Step-by-step timing belt replacement for the VW Polo4 1.0 (ARA): 103 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

On the Polo4 with the 1.0 16V ARA engine, the timing belt is a supported-engine job: the engine mount and support bracket come out and the engine is lowered until the crankshaft pulley bolt can be reached. Upper and lower covers, the drive belt tensioner and the crankshaft pulley come off, the crankshaft goes to TDC on cylinder 1 and the camshaft gearwheels are locked with the special tool. The ground-down tooth on the crankshaft gear has to line up with the mark on the oil pump. The tensioner is fitted with its base plate cut-out over the securing bolt, then turned until both marks align. After two turns by hand the marks are checked again. The crankshaft pulley bolts are renewed and oiled, and the engine mount goes back with new bolts.

103 steps 1 engine code

🧭 Before you start

Support the engine, remove the engine mount and bracket, and lower it to reach the crankshaft pulley. Take off the covers, ancillary belt tensioner and pulley, set TDC on cylinder 1 and lock the camshaft gearwheels. Fit the belt, set the tensioner until its marks align, tighten it, remove the locking tool and turn the engine twice to recheck. Refit the pulley on new oiled bolts, the drive belt, engine mount with new bolts, covers and air filter.

Fits: VW Jetta VI (16, 2010–2018); platform code 1.0

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Special tools named: locking tool

Don't miss

  • The ground-down tooth on the crankshaft gear must align with the oil pump mark.
  • Engage the tensioner base plate cut-out over its securing bolt before setting tension.
  • Tension is right when the tensioner marks align; repeat if the pointer sits outside the window.
  • Renew and lubricate the crankshaft pulley bolts, and use new engine mount bolts.
  • Never turn the engine backwards during or after the belt fit.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
