Lowering rear axle — VW

Lowering rear axle on VW: 20 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This sets out how to lower the rear subframe with its attachments on four-wheel-drive versions of the platform codes listed below (7N1, 7N2), usually to reach the Haldex clutch, final drive or lines above the axle. Wheels, both brake calipers (hung on the body, not opened up), coil springs, rear silencer and propshaft come off, and the speed sensor wiring and brake lines are unclipped from the body. The car is then strapped to the lift with T10038, the subframe position is fixed, and the axle is let down in two stages, first about 2 cm and then about 140 mm. Strapping the body down is the safety point that cannot be skipped, and the brake hose clips must be released rather than any brake line opened.

20 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the wheels, hang the calipers, take out the coil springs, rear silencer and propshaft, and free the sensor wiring and brake lines. Strap the vehicle to the lift arms, mark or fix the subframe position and lower it about 2 cm. Unplug the Haldex clutch connector and unclip the remaining brake lines, then lower the subframe about 140 mm. Reassembly runs the other way, with the propshaft refitted and wheels tightened to specification.

Fits: VW Sharan II / SEAT Alhambra (7N, 2010–)

Don't miss

  • Strap the vehicle to the lift with T10038 before lowering; otherwise it can slide off the platform.
  • Fix the subframe position before releasing it so the alignment is kept on refitting.
  • Do not open the brake lines; release the retaining clip and detach the hose from the subframe instead.
  • Brake line clips above the left drive shaft flange are destroyed on removal and must be renewed.
  • Disconnect the Haldex clutch connector before lowering the subframe the full 140 mm.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
