Installing particulate filter with NOx storage catalytic converter on VW: 24 steps, engines CJAA. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Golf VI (5K, 2008–2013); platform code 521
Don't miss
- Position lower bracket on cylinder block and on particulate filter with securing nuts. (Do not tighten securing nuts yet).
- Position particulate filter on upper bracket with securing bolt. (Do not tighten securing bolt yet).
- If the particulate filter was renewed, the adaption of ash mass comparison must be set to "“0”""“Guided functions”".
- Carry out a road test. If the steering wheel spokes are »offset«, the vehicle geometry must be measured Running gear, axles, steering44.

📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Danger of damaging decoupling element between particulate filter and NOx storage catalytic converter. When removing and installing:Do not bend decoupling element more than 10°.Install decoupling element so that it is not under tension.Take care not to damage wire mesh on decoupling element. The decoupling element must be secured with transportation lock T10404 to stop overstretching. — Bring particulate filter to installation position. Note electrical wiring and components when doing this.
- Install subframe Running gear, axles, steering40Assembly overview - subframe, anti-roll bar, suspension links.
- Install new seal between NOx storage catalytic converter and exhaust flap control unit J883.
- Install new securing clamp between NOx storage catalytic converter and exhaust flap control unit J883:
- Install new seal between NOx storage catalytic converter and particulate filter.
- Install new securing clamp between NOx storage catalytic converter and particulate filter.
- Install tunnel cross-piece:
- Position lower bracket on cylinder block and on particulate filter with securing nuts. (Do not tighten securing nuts yet).
- Position new securing clamp with new seal between particulate filter and turbocharger (do not tighten securing clamp yet):
- Install exhaust gas recirculation filter .
- Position new securing clamp between particulate filter and filter for exhaust gas recirculation (do not tighten securing clamp yet):
- Position particulate filter on upper bracket with securing bolt. (Do not tighten securing bolt yet).
- Tighten fasteners in the following sequence:
- Hanger for NOx storage catalytic converter on subframe:
- Securing clamp between particulate filter and turbocharger.
- Lower bracket to cylinder block:
- Lower bracket to particulate filter:
- Upper bracket to particulate filter:
- Upper bracket to cylinder head:

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
