Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Passat B5 (3B)
- Renewed: gasket
Don't miss
- Lightly oil O-ring before installing.
- Reuse previous hexagon nut to secure flange to pinion shaft. Otherwise the original installation position cannot be restored.
- Screw nut on the same number of turns that it was unscrewed.
- To ensure that installation is correct, check dimensions (a) and (b).
- If there is a factory marking on the propshaft, measure radial run-out at the propshaft flange on final drive and align paint marking on propshaft with new marking on flange.
📋 Procedure
- Renew O-ring between pinion shaft bearing and flange.
- Lightly oil O-ring before installing.
- Half-fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with sealing greaseG 052 128 A1.
- Lightly oil outer circumference of oil seal.
- Drive in seal for propshaft flange to stop with drift3026.
- Drive propshaft flange onto pinion shaft far enough that securing nut can be fitted.
- Clean residual oil and grease from pinion shaft nut and thread of pinion shaft. Thinly coat threads with locking fluid D 000 600. [Note: Reuse previous hexagon nut to secure flange to pinion shaft. Otherwise the original installation position cannot be restored.]
- Tighten pinion shaft nut exactly onto previously marked position. [Note: Screw nut on the same number of turns that it was unscrewed.]
- To ensure that installation is correct, check dimensions (a) and (b).
- Secure hexagon nut.
- Top up gear oil in rear final drive and check oil level .
- If there is a factory marking on the propshaft, measure radial run-out at the propshaft flange on final drive and align paint marking on propshaft with new marking on flange.
- If there was no factory marking (paint) on propshaft and position of propshaft relative to final drive flange was therefore marked on removal, reinstall propshaft in same position . [Note: After removing the propshaft from the rear final drive, an additional balancing disc (thicker washer) that may be located between the base plate and the bolt head must not be reinstalled. It is essential to clean residual locking fluid from threaded holes in flange shafts of gearbox and rear final drive after removing propshaft. Otherwise there is a danger that new bolts will seize when screwed in and then shear when removed again.A thread chaser is suitable for cleaning.Renew propshaft bolts (self-locking).]
- Renew gasket on propshaft flange and bolt on propshaft .
- Install exhaust system and align free of tension 26Removing and installing parts of exhaust system.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
