Installing battery — VW
Installing battery on VW: 16 steps, 7 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform codes 6V2, 6V5, 9K9
Don't miss
- On batteries with a hose for central venting ensure that the hose is not pinched. Only then can the battery vent freely.
- Ensure that the opening on the upper side of the battery cover is not blocked on batteries without a hose for central venting.
- Battery terminal clamps must be fitted only by hand without force to prevent damage to battery housing.Battery terminals must not be greased.
- See connecting plan in appropriate current flow diagram .
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | ⚠ A loosely fitted battery creates the following dangers:Shortened service life due to… |
| 22 Nm (16 lb-ft) | Install retaining bracket and tighten M8×25 securing bolt (arrow) |
| 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft) | Tighten battery positive terminal clamp securing bolt (arrow) |
| 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft) | Tighten securing bolt |
| 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft) | Tighten securing bolt of battery negative terminal clamp |
| 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft) | Tighten securing bolt of battery positive terminal clamp |
| 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft) | Insert tray (2), and tighten securing bolt (1) |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Install battery so that the lug of the battery carrier (arrow) engages in the battery base strip recess (1).
- On batteries with a hose for central venting ensure that the hose is not pinched. Only then can the battery vent freely.
- Ensure that the opening on the upper side of the battery cover is not blocked on batteries without a hose for central venting.
- Install retaining bracket and tighten M8×25 securing bolt (arrow) to 22 Nm. — 22 Nm (16 lb-ft)
- If removed reinstall the heat insulation jacket.
- Fit positive cable clamp onto battery positive terminal. [Note: Battery terminal clamps must be fitted only by hand without force to prevent damage to battery housing.Battery terminals must not be greased.]
- Tighten battery positive terminal clamp securing bolt (arrow) to 6 Nm. — 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft)
- Fit fuse holder onto battery, when doing this fit current conductor plate onto securing pins on battery positive terminal.
- Engage fuse holder spring catch in battery.
- Tighten securing bolt to 6 Nm. — 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft)
- Close heat insulation jacket if necessary.
- Tighten current conductor plate securing nut (1) on positive (+) terminal clamp.
- Reconnect wiring/cables to strip fuses again if they have been disconnected and tighten securing bolts (2). [Note: See connecting plan in appropriate current flow diagram .]
- Reconnect connector (3).
- Fit fuse holder cover and close.
- After installing, check that battery is seated securely. A loosely fitted battery creates the following dangers:

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
