Installing and tensioning: VW Jetta VI / Golf V / Jetta (AXQ, BHX, CBDA, CBDB, …)
Step-by-step installing and tensioning for the VW Jetta VI / Golf V / Jetta: 43 steps, 10 torque figures.
This is the toothed belt installation and tensioning for the common-rail TDI engines listed below, CBDA, CBDB, CBEA and CEGA among them, on the Golf V/Jetta (1K) and related platforms. With the crankshaft locked at TDC, the camshaft hub and the high-pressure pump hub are each secured with locking pins, their pulleys turned to the end of their slots, and the belt laid around crankshaft, tensioner, camshaft, coolant pump and pump pulleys, finishing on the idler. The tensioner's eccentric is set so its pointer sits mid-gap, and the pulley bolts are tightened while the counterhold keeps the camshaft pulley loaded. The rest of the job is checking: two crank turns, relock, recheck, and only then the final bolts and guards.
🧭 Before you start
Lock the camshaft and high-pressure pump hubs with pins, set both pulleys to the end of their slots and fit the belt, idler last. Set the tensioner pointer to the middle of the gap and tighten its nut to 20 Nm, then tighten the pulley bolts with the counterhold applied. Remove the locks, turn the engine two turns, re-establish TDC and check the timing, correcting at the camshaft sprocket if needed. Fit the new bolts, guards, vibration damper at 10 Nm + 90° and the poly V-belt.
Fits: VW Jetta VI (16, 2010–2018), VW Golf V / Jetta (1K, 2003–2009); platform code AJ5
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: locking pin
Don't miss
- Turn the eccentric only clockwise until the pointer is centred in the base plate gap.
- Keep the counterhold pressed so the camshaft pulley is under tension while tightening.
- Always turn the crankshaft in the engine's direction of rotation when checking.
- The vibration damper takes new bolts: 10 Nm + 90°.
- Make sure the upper belt guard clips audibly to the cylinder head cover and clears the hub.

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- If necessary, turn camshaft hub with counterhold T10172 and adapters T10172/4 until camshaft can be secured in position. To do this, hand-tighten at least one securing bolt (1).
- Lock camshaft hub with locking pin3359. To do this, slide locking pin through outer free elongated hole into hole in cylinder head.
- Loosen bolts (1) which had been tightened only hand-tight again.
- If necessary, turn hub of high-pressure fuel pump at bolt heads (1) with a screwdriver until it can be secured in position.
- Lock hub of high-pressure fuel pump with locking pin3359. To do this, slide locking pin into adjustment hole outside toothed belt pulley.
- Turn camshaft pulley and toothed belt pulley of high-pressure fuel pump in their elongated holes clockwise to stop.
- Fit toothed belt to crankshaft toothed belt pulley, tensioning roller, camshaft pulley, toothed belt pulley of coolant pump and toothed belt pulley of high-pressure pump.
- Finally, fit toothed belt to idler roller.
- Loosen tensioning roller securing nut and pull out locking tool T10265. [Note: Ensure that tensioning roller seats correctly in rear toothed belt guard (arrow).]
- Carefully turn eccentric adjuster of tensioning roller clockwise using special wrench, long reach T10264 until indicator is in middle of gap in base plate (2).
- Hold tensioning roller in this position and tighten tensioning roller securing nut.
- Apply counterhold T10172 as shown. Press counterhold T10172 in direction of arrow, keeping camshaft toothed belt pulley under tension.
- In this position, tighten securing bolts (1) of camshaft pulley and of toothed belt pulley for high-pressure fuel pump.
- Remove locking pins3359 and crankshaft stop T10050.
- Turn crankshaft at least two rotations in engine direction of rotation and set again to TDC no. 1 cylinder.
- Fit crankshaft stop T10050 again to crankshaft belt pulley.
- Now turn crankshaft in engine direction of rotation until pin of crankshaft stop (arrow) engages in sealing flange from rotational movement. [Note: During the following checking procedure, only the camshaft and crankshaft must be secured in position. It is very difficult to find the securing point of the high-pressure fuel pump hub again. However, a slight deviation (arrow) does not influence the engine operation.]
- Check whether:
- Pull crankshaft stop T10050 back until pin uncovers hole.
- Turn crankshaft in opposite direction of engine rotation slightly past TDC.
- Now turn crankshaft slowly in direction of engine rotation until camshaft hub can be secured in position.
- After locking, loosen securing nuts of crankshaft toothed belt pulley.
- Turn crankshaft in engine direction of rotation until crankshaft stop pin engages in sealing flange whilst turning.
- Tighten camshaft chain sprocket securing bolts.
- Slightly turn crankshaft in opposite direction of engine rotation.
- Now turn crankshaft in engine direction of rotation until crankshaft stop pin engages in sealing flange whilst turning.
- Tighten camshaft chain sprocket securing bolts.
- Remove locking pin3359 and crankshaft stop T10050.
- Turn crankshaft at least two rotations in engine direction of rotation and set again to just before TDC No. 1 cylinder.
- Repeat check.
- Tighten new securing bolts as follows:
- Install lower and middle parts of toothed belt guard (arrows).
- Install belt pulley/vibration damper.
- Install poly V-belt .
- Install upper toothed belt guard.
- Ensure upper part of toothed belt guard is correctly clipped to cylinder head cover. [Note: For illustration purposes, the camshaft pulley is shown removed.]
- To do this, press upper part of toothed belt guard (using a screwdriver if necessary) against cylinder head cover in area of clips (arrows) until clips audibly engage in each other.
- Check that there is sufficient clearance between hub and upper part of toothed belt guard.
- Install front right wheel housing liner General body repairs, exterior66Wheel housing liner.
- Install noise insulation General body repairs, exterior50Body - front; Noise insulation.
- Install supplementary fuel pump V393.
- Install fuel filter .
- Install engine cover .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
