Timing belt replacement: VW Golf6, Golf Plus6 1.6 (BSE, BSF, CCSA, CHGA, …)

Step-by-step timing belt replacement for the VW Golf6, Golf Plus6 1.6: 85 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This is the timing belt change on the Golf VI and Golf Plus with the 1.6 MPi family of petrol engines (BSE, BSF, CCSA, CMXA and related BiFuel and MultiFuel versions). The engine mount is taken out with the engine held on a support bar, then the ancillary drive belt, crankshaft pulley and lower covers come off. Before the belt is released, the camshaft gearwheel mark is lined up with the mark on the rear cover. The new belt is fitted, the tensioner pulley is turned to its stops in both directions at least 5 times, and pointer A is brought in line with pointer B before the nut is tightened. The engine is then turned 2 rotations by hand, never backwards, and the setting checked.

85 steps 5 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Support the engine, remove the engine mount, ancillary belt, crankshaft pulley and timing covers. Align the camshaft mark with the rear cover, loosen the tensioner and remove the belt. Fit a new belt, cycle the tensioner to its stops, set pointer A to pointer B and tighten the nut, then turn the engine 2 rotations and recheck. Refit the mount with new bolts in stages, the support bracket, covers, ancillary belt, engine cover and noise insulation.

Fits: platform codes 1.6, |, BIFUEL, (LPG), MPI, MULTIFUEL

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Renewed: bolts note

Don't miss

  • Always fit a new timing belt once removed; check tensioner and idler pulleys.
  • Never turn the engine against its normal direction of rotation.
  • Turn the tensioner pulley at least 5 times to its stops before setting pointer A to pointer B.
  • Use new bolts where specified and tighten them in stages.
  • Turn the engine 2 rotations by hand and recheck the timing marks.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
