gearbox - disassemble and assemble — VW

gearbox - disassemble and assemble on VW: 27 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This is a bench strip of the automated gearbox used on the VW models with the platform codes listed below, the unit with a separate gear selector VX65 and clutch actuator VX64. The gearbox is mounted on bracket T10484 over an oil tray, then the clutch lever with release bearing and guide, and the clutch housing, are removed, levering evenly round the shoulders without marking the sealing faces. The differential, gear selector, input speed sender G182 and clutch actuator follow, then the thrust rings, reverse gear and bearing. With the housing on rotating bracket VAS 6095, the input shaft, planet pinion and selector forks come out as a set. The key points are not pushing the sliding sleeve outwards, which lets parts spring out, and applying sealant AMV 188 200 evenly before the clutch housing is torqued down.

27 steps

🧭 Before you start

Mount the gearbox on its bracket, drain it, and remove the clutch lever, release bearing and the clutch housing. Remove the differential, gear selector VX65, speed sender G182 and clutch actuator VX64, then the thrust rings, reverse gear and bearing. On the rotating bracket, ease out the selector fork shaft and remove the input shaft, planet pinion and forks. Reassemble in reverse, seal the housing joint with AMV 188 200 and tighten the clutch housing to specification before refitting the actuators and sensor.

Fits: platform codes 6A1, 6A5

Don't miss

  • Lever the clutch housing off evenly round its shoulders without damaging the sealing faces.
  • Do not press the sliding sleeve outwards, or internal parts come out uncontrolled.
  • Lift the input shaft slightly when removing the reverse gear.
  • Apply sealing compound AMV 188 200 evenly to the housing sealing surface.
  • Refit the oil drain plug before refilling.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
