Oil pump replacement: VW variant -A (CFNA, CFNB)
Step-by-step oil pump replacement for the VW variant -A (CFNA/CFNB): 38 steps, 4 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform codes 612, 614
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: T10170/1, T10171, T10172, dial gauge
Don't miss
- Install a M6 bolt (arrow) hand-tight (do not tighten) to secure camshaft clamp T10171 A.
- Mark direction of rotation of timing chain (3) using coloured felt tip marker pen.
- Undo bolts (2) and (4) and remove chain sprocket (1) together with timing chain (3). Counterhold using counterhold T10172.
- Mark direction of rotation of oil pump drive chain (2) using coloured felt tip marker pen.
- Cast lug (2) on chain sprocket (1) must seat in groove (3) on crankshaft journal. — Mark the positions of the chain sprocket and crankshaft in relation to cylinder block, using a felt tip marker pen.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 15 Nm (11 lb-ft) | Fit chain tensioner on oil pump drive chain and tight bolt (3) |
| 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) | Then tighten new bolt (1) |
| 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) | Tighten new bolts (2) and (4) |
| 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft) | Fit chain tensioner (1) and tighten bolts (2) |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Remove cover from camshaft housing.
- Press catches (1) and pull air intake connecting piece out of air intake guide.
- Remove spring-type clip (2) using hose clip pliersVAS 6340 or spring-type clip pliersVAS 5024A and pull air intake hose off air filter housing.
- Remove bolts for exhaust camshaft cover (3) and inlet camshaft cover (4) and pull covers out of camshaft housing.
- Remove spark plug from cylinder 1. To do this, use puller T10094 A and spark plug wrench3122 B.
- Screw dial gauge adapter T10170 into spark plug hole to stop.
- Insert dial gaugeVAS 6079 together with extension T10170/1 as far as it will go and secure in place with the self-locking nut (arrow).
- Turn crankshaft in engine direction of rotation to TDC for No. 1 cylinder: Make a note of the position of the dial gauge's small pointer. [Note: If crankshaft is turned more than 0.01 mm past TDC, then turn crankshaft back 45° against engine direction of rotation. Then turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to TDC for No. 1 cylinder.Permissible deviation from TDC for No. 1 cylinder: ± 0.01 mm.]
- Insert camshaft clamp T10171 A as far as stop in camshaft openings.
- Install a M6 bolt (arrow) hand-tight (do not tighten) to secure camshaft clamp T10171 A.
- Remove timing case .
- Pull cover (1) off chain sprocket of oil pump.
- Press tensioning rail in (direction of arrow) by hand and lock piston of chain tensioner with locking pin T40011
- Mark direction of rotation of timing chain (3) using coloured felt tip marker pen.
- Undo bolts (2) and (4) and remove chain sprocket (1) together with timing chain (3). Counterhold using counterhold T10172.
- Hold oil pump chain sprocket with counterhold T10172 and loosen securing bolt (1).
- Lever out tensioning springs (1) with a screwdriver held against bolt (2) and remove tensioning springs (1).
- Unscrew securing bolt (3) and remove chain tensioner.
- Mark direction of rotation of oil pump drive chain (2) using coloured felt tip marker pen.
- Remove securing bolt for chain sprocket (1) and remove chain sprockets (1) and (3) together with drive chain for oil pump (2).
- Push chain sprocket (1) in (direction of arrow) onto crankshaft journal as far as the stop.
- ⚠ Cast lug (2) on chain sprocket (1) must seat in groove (3) on crankshaft journal. — Mark the positions of the chain sprocket and crankshaft in relation to cylinder block, using a felt tip marker pen.
- Place oil pump drive chain (3) onto drive chain sprocket (1) and position drive chain sprocket (2) onto oil pump drive shaft at same time. [Note: Note the marking indicating the direction of rotation of the oil pump drive chain.Oil pump drive sprocket only fits on oil pump drive shaft in one position (arrow).]
- Hold oil pump drive sprocket in place with counterhold T10172.
- Then tighten new bolt (1) to 20 Nm and turn + 90° (1/4 turn) further. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- Fit chain tensioner on oil pump drive chain and tight bolt (3) to 15 Nm. — 15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- Lever tensioning spring (1) onto bolt (2) using a screwdriver. [Note: Comply with markings (arrows). The crankshaft must not rotate.]
- Tighten chain sprocket (3) hand-tight with new bolt.
- Place timing chain (1) on crankshaft chain sprocket (4) and exhaust camshaft chain sprocket (3) and tighten chain sprocket (2) hand-tight using a new bolt. [Note: Note the marking (indicating the direction of rotation) on the timing chain (1).]
- Fit chain tensioner (1) and tighten bolts (2) to 9 Nm. — 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft)
- Tension timing chain by pulling locking pin T40011from chain tensioner.
- Checking marking on crankshaft chain sprocket and on cylinder block. They must be in line with each other.
- Tighten new bolts (2) and (4) to 50 Nm (using counterhold tool T10172). [Note: Securing bolts (2) and (4) are only tightened 90° further once timing has been checked.] — 50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- Undo bolt (arrow) and remove camshaft clamp T10171 A from camshaft housing.
- Check valve timing .
- Hold camshaft wheels with counterhold T10172 and tighten bolts (2) and (4) a 1/4 turn (90°) further with a rigid wrench. [Note: Camshaft sprockets must not move on camshaft whilst tightening.]
- Fit cover of oil pump wheel (1).
- Install timing case .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
