Draining fuel tank (vehicles with engine codes AXX and BWA with intact fuel pump) — VW
Draining fuel tank (vehicles with engine codes AXX and BWA with intact fuel pump) on VW: 9 steps, engines AXX, BWA.
On the Golf V and Jetta (1K5, 1K2) with AXX or BWA engines, and as long as the in-tank pump still works, the tank is emptied by running that pump and pumping the fuel out through the supply line into fuel extractor VAS 5190. The extractor is connected to the supply line with adapter VAS 5190/3 and earthed to the vehicle. Under the rear bench, the cover with fuel pump control unit J538 is removed, the 5-pin connector pulled off the delivery unit flange, and test adapter VAS 5565 fitted so remote control V.A.G 1348/3A can run the pump with the engine off. The fuel system is pressurised, so eye protection, a cloth at the joint and a properly earthed extractor are not optional.
🧭 Before you start
Release pressure at the supply line with a cloth, connect VAS 5190 with adapter VAS 5190/3 and earth it. Remove the rear bench and the cover with J538, unplug the 5-pin connector and fit VAS 5565 with remote control V.A.G 1348/3A to battery positive. Remove the filler cap, then run the pump with the remote and open the extractor tap until the tank is empty.
Fits: VW Golf V / Jetta (1K, 2003–2009)
- Special tools named: VAS 5565
Don't miss
- The system is pressurised; wear eye protection and wrap a cloth round the line before pulling it off.
- Connect the earth wire of extractor VAS 5190 to vehicle earth.
- Press in the securing ring to release the fuel line coupling.
- The remote control only runs the pump with the engine stopped; it is not a test of the pump.
- Remove the filler cap before pumping so the tank can vent.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
