Dismantling and assembling output shaft for 3rd and 4th gear on VW: 25 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

25 steps

🧭 Before you start

Fits: VW Sharan II / SEAT Alhambra (7N, 2010–), VW Tiguan I (5N, 2007–2016)

  • Special tools named: puller, feeler gauge

Don't miss

  • If 5th gear wheel is close to circumferential groove for retaining ring (arrow) during pressing procedure, secure output shaft from falling.
  • When 5th gear wheel has been pressed off in previous step, let output shaft cool off.
  • Pull off tapered roller bearing inner race for bearing in gearbox housing .

📋 Procedure

  1. Before fitting puller, position press toolVW 431 in output shaft and set thrust plate40-105 on it.
  2. Remove retaining ring.
  3. Place tools beneath 3rd gear synchromeshed gear so that no parts will be damaged during pressing. [Note: If 5th gear wheel is close to circumferential groove for retaining ring (arrow) during pressing procedure, secure output shaft from falling.]
  4. Remove retaining ring.
  5. Press inner ring onto cone of synchromeshed gear and measure gap (a) using a feeler gauge.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
