Disconnecting and reconnecting battery, vehicles with one-battery concept — VW
Disconnecting and reconnecting battery, vehicles with one-battery concept on VW: 19 steps, 4 torque figures.
This covers disconnecting and reconnecting the battery on VW models with the one-battery concept and platform code 7M8, where a fuse holder with strip fuses sits on top of the battery and the positive clamp carries a current conductor plate. Order matters: negative strap off first, then the fuse holder cover, the conductor plate nut, the strip fuse nuts if the wiring has to come off and the connector, before the fuse holder spring catch is levered free and the holder lifted off. Only then can the positive clamp be released. On refitting, every nut goes back to 7 Nm, and the strip fuse nuts are the critical ones, because a loose nut there can burn the wiring.
🧭 Before you start
Switch off ignition and consumers and remove the key, then disconnect the negative strap. Open the fuse holder, undo the conductor plate nut and, if needed, the strip fuse nuts and connector, lever the spring catch free and lift the fuse holder off before releasing the positive clamp. Refit the positive clamp by hand and tighten to 7 Nm, refit the fuse holder onto its pins, tighten the conductor plate and strip fuse nuts to 7 Nm, reconnect the connector and close the cover. Fit the negative clamp at 7 Nm and work through the post-reconnection steps.
Fits: VW Sharan I / SEAT Alhambra (7M)
Don't miss
- Disconnect the negative strap first and reconnect it last.
- Fit the terminal clamps by hand without force and do not grease the terminals.
- Tighten the strip fuse nuts to 7 Nm; loose nuts can burn the wiring.
- Seat the current conductor plate on the positive terminal pins before tightening its nut.
- Complete the listed post-reconnection steps so electrical equipment works normally again.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft) | ⚠ Battery terminal clamps must be fitted only by hand without force to prevent damage to… |
| 7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft) | If wiring was disconnected, reconnect again to strip fuses and then tighten securing nuts… |
| 7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft) | Reconnect negative terminal clamp to battery negative terminal and tighten |
| 7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft) | Tighten current conductor plate securing nut (1) on positive terminal clamp |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Danger of injury! Observe warning notices and safety regulations ! — Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers and remove ignition key.
- Disconnect battery earth strap on battery negative terminal first.
- Press locking lugs (arrows) together to open fuse holder and take off cover.
- Unscrew current conductor plate securing nut (1) on positive terminal clamp.
- Remove securing nuts (2) to disconnect wiring to strip fuses.
- Pull off connector (3).
- Release tension on fuse holder spring catch by pressing down with a thumb and lever spring catch locking device off battery using a suitable screwdriver.
- Remove fuse holder upwards off battery.
- Then release the battery positive terminal clamp securing bolt (arrow).
- Fit positive cable clamp onto battery positive terminal.
- ⚠ Battery terminal clamps must be fitted only by hand without force to prevent damage to battery housing.Battery terminals must no longer be greased. — Tighten battery positive terminal clamp securing bolt (arrow) to 7 Nm. — 7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft)
- Fit fuse holder onto battery, when doing this fit current conductor plate onto securing pins on battery positive terminal.
- Engage fuse holder spring catch in battery.
- Tighten current conductor plate securing nut (1) on positive terminal clamp to 7 Nm. — 7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft)
- If wiring was disconnected, reconnect again to strip fuses and then tighten securing nuts (2) to 7 Nm. [Note: See connecting diagram in respective current flow diagram .] — 7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft)
- ⚠ If the securing nuts for the strip fuses are not correctly tightened, the wiring could burn, leading in turn to malfunctions in the electrical system. It is essential to ensure the securing nuts are tightened to the specified torque. — Reconnect connector (3).
- Fit fuse holder cover and close.
- Reconnect negative terminal clamp to battery negative terminal and tighten to 7 Nm. — 7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft)
- Perform steps according to table.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
