📋 Procedure

Checking
regulating flap potentiometer
G584
Special tools and workshop equipment required
Turbocharger tester
V.A.G 1397/A
Hand vacuum pump
VAS 6213
Vacuum hose of approx. 10 cm in length
Note
For information on how to use the
turbocharger tester
V.A.G 1397/A
refer to the operating instructions.
Ensure absolute leakproof connection of hoses to avoid measurement errors.
Ensure that the test hose is not kinked.
Pressing the memory button
M
on the
turbocharger tester
V.A.G 1397/A
causes the last measured value to be stored until the memory button
M
is pressed again or the
turbocharger tester
V.A.G 1397/A
is switched off.
Test precondition
Checking
regulating flap potentiometer
G584
for tampering
Check sealing paint
2
at top of securing clip
1
for
regulating flap potentiometer
G584
. If the sealing paint shows signs of damage or if it has been removed completely, this is a clear indicator for tampering.
Note
On vehicles without securing clip, check the sealing paint on the adjuster nuts at the linkage of the
regulating flap potentiometer
G584
for damage.
If you suspect tampering, the repair work is not covered by the warranty.
Test procedure
Pull vacuum hose
arrow
off
regulating flap potentiometer
G584
.
Caution
Risk of damage. Proceed with care when pulling off the vacuum hose. The connecting piece may break off.
Fit T-piece with a vacuum hose connected onto
regulating flap potentiometer
G584
.
Connect one end of the T-piece with the
hand vacuum pump
VAS 6213
and the other end with connection II of
turbocharger tester
V.A.G 1397/A
.
Note
Ensure absolute leak-proof connection of hoses to avoid measurement errors.
Set the
turbocharger tester
V.A.G 1397/A
to measuring range II (gauge pressure).
Ensure that the
hand vacuum pump
VAS 6213
is set to generating vacuum.
Note
When the end position has almost been reached, pump slower and carefully observe the linkage. The result will be falsified, if you keep on pumping after the end position has been reached.
Using the
hand vacuum pump
VAS 6213
, verify that the vacuum unit for
regulating flap potentiometer
G584
has no leaks and that the travel mechanism is free to move. To do this, observe the linkage of the vacuum unit.
Note
The travel mechanism must start to move at a pressure of -80 … -150 mbar (as indicated on the
turbocharger tester
V.A.G 1397/A
). The end position must be reached at a pressure of -200 … -280 mbar.
The linkage must be free to move without catching.
Note the pressure values in mbar for the start and end of movement. These values will be required during guided fault finding.
If the linkage is not free to move, renew
regulating flap potentiometer
G584
.
If no vacuum is generated, renew vacuum unit for turbocharger.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
