Checking intake manifold change-over: VW Golf IV / Bora (ADR, AEB, AFY, AGN, …)

Step-by-step checking intake manifold change-over for the VW Golf IV / Bora: 21 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This is a diagnostic check of the variable intake manifold change-over on the VW platform codes listed below with the petrol engines listed below, using hand vacuum pump VAS 6213 and vacuum tester V.A.G 1368. It starts with the simple things: vacuum lines routed and connected correctly, hoses not porous, the system free of leaks. Each actuator is then tested separately by pulling its hose off the change-over valve, connecting the tester and pumping to a maximum of 500 mbar; the vacuum must hold. A leaking actuator on the upper part means a new upper manifold, on the lower part a new lower manifold, because the valve is integrated and not serviceable on its own. If both hold, the flaps are checked for free movement with the upper manifold off.

🧭 Before you start

Inspect the vacuum lines and hoses and test the system for leaks. Disconnect the actuator hose from change-over valve 1, connect the hand pump to tester connection B and the actuator to connection A, set the tester to A/B and pump to no more than 500 mbar; if vacuum drops, renew the upper manifold part. Repeat on valve 2 for the lower part. If both hold, remove the upper manifold, check the change-over components move freely, repeat the leak test with flap movement observed, and renew the faulty part.

Fits: VW Golf IV / Bora (1J)

Don't miss

  • Check line routing and hose porosity before blaming the actuators.
  • Do not exceed 500 mbar of vacuum with the hand pump.
  • Vacuum must not drop; any drop condemns that manifold section.
  • The change-over valve is integrated in the manifold and not visible from outside.
  • Confirm the flaps actually move during the repeat test.

📋 Procedure

  1. Check vacuum lines to make sure they are connected properly and .
  2. Check vacuum hoses for porosity.
  3. Test vacuum system for leaks.
  4. Pull vacuum hose to actuator for intake manifold changeover (arrow) off intake manifold changeover valve (1). [Note: The actuator for the variable intake manifold change-over valve is integrated in the intake manifold and is not therefore visible from the outside.]
  5. Connect hand vacuum pumpVAS 6213 to vacuum testerV.A.G 1368 -connection B-.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
