Checking fuel pressure regulator: VW (BPR, BPS)
Step-by-step checking fuel pressure regulator for the VW (BPR/BPS): 10 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Checking the fuel pressure regulator on the VW with the BPR or BPS engine is a holding-pressure test, done with the engine off. Fuse 41 for the fuel pump is removed and remote control V.A.G 1348/3A is connected between its contact and battery positive so the pump can be run directly. The supply line is pulled off with a cloth around it to bleed off pressure, and pressure tester V.A.G 1318 is connected with the gauge shut-off tap closed. Running the pump for about 10 seconds fills the filter and builds roughly 3 bar. The gauge is then watched: after 10 minutes it must not have fallen below 2.5 bar. If it has, the line connections are checked for leaks first; only when they are tight is the regulator renewed.
🧭 Before you start
Remove fuse 41, connect the remote control to the pump contact and battery positive, release pressure and pull off the supply line, then connect the pressure tester with its shut-off tap closed. Run the pump for about 10 seconds to build about 3 bar and watch the gauge. If pressure falls below 2.5 bar within 10 minutes, check line connections for leaks; if none are found, renew the regulator.
- Special tools named: V.A.G 1348
- Renewed: fuel pressure regulator
Don't miss
- The fuel system is under pressure; wear glasses and protective clothing.
- Wrap a cloth round the connection and pull the hose off carefully to release pressure.
- Close the gauge shut-off tap (lever across the flow, position B) for this test.
- Pass mark: no drop below 2.5 bar after 10 minutes.
- Rule out leaking line connections before condemning the regulator.

📋 Procedure
- Remove fuse holder cover.
- Remove fuse No. 41 (fuel pump) from fuse holder.
- Connect remote control for V.A.G 1348V.A.G 1348/3A with adapter leadV.A.G 1348/3-2 to contact 41a of fuel pump and battery positive (+).
- ⚠ Fuel system is under pressure! Wear protective glasses and clothing to avoid injuries and skin contact. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection. — Pull supply line (1) off output side of fuel filter. [Note: Press in safety ring to release fuel line.]
- Connect pressure testerV.A.G 1318 using connectorV.A.G 1318/23 and adapter setV.A.G 1318/17 as shown.
- Close pressure gauge shut-off tap (lever at right angles to throughflow direction - position (B)).
- Operate remote controlV.A.G 1348/3A to V.A.G 1348 for approx. 10 seconds to fill fuel filter and build-up a system pressure of approx. 3 bar.
- Watch pressure drop on pressure gauge. After 10 minutes, pressure must not drop below 2.5 bar.
- Check line connections for leaks.
- Renew fuel pressure regulator.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
