Checking camshaft timing adjustment: VW 1.6 (ARC, AVY)

Step-by-step checking camshaft timing adjustment for the VW 1.6 (ARC/AVY): factory workshop text. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Workshop procedure for VW — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.

📋 Procedure

AVY
The camshaft adjustment is dependant upon load and speed. Oil pressure is directed to the camshaft adjuster (mechanical adjustment unit) by the camshaft adjustment solenoid valve and the camshaft adjuster then realigns the valve timing.

Check conditions

Fuse Nos. 30, 31 and 36 must be OK.
Coolant temperature must be at least 80 °C, =>display group 04, display zone 3.

Test sequence

Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 (V.A.G 1552). Start engine and select engine control unit with "Address word" 01. Connecting fault reader and selecting engine control unit:

Set an engine speed of 2500...6000 rpm with speed regulator V.A.G 1788/10:
Check specifications in display zones 1...3.
Observe the display for the operating mode of the camshaft adjustment in display zone 2.
Specification: "CS-ctrlON"

Note:

Display zone 2 shows whether the camshaft has actually been adjusted.

If the diagnosis is initiated from engine control unit the display in display zone 3 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".

Continue to maintain the speed at 2500...6000 rpm until the specification "Syst. OK" appears in display zone 3.
Press ⇒key.
Press keys 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q key.
Switch off ignition.

The following faults can be present if "CS-crtlOFF" is displayed in display zone 2:

Engine control unit is performing the adaption of the position of the inlet camshaft (phase position):

Wait a moment.

Camshaft adjustment valve (N205) sticking/defective.

Check camshaft adjustment valve (N205)
=> Page
15-65.

If "Syst. n.OK" is displayed in display zone 3, the following faults can be present:

Very thin oil in conjunction with high engine temperatures (exceeding 110 °C)

Allow the engine to cool down or replace the engine oil.

Oil pressure too low in cylinder head

Check oil pressure and oil pressure switch => Page
17-17.

Camshaft adjustment valve (N205) sticking/defective

Check camshaft adjustment valve (N205)
=> Page
15-65.

Checking camshaft adjustment valve

Remove the cover above the camshaft housing.
Pull the 2-pin connector off camshaft adjustment valve (N205) -arrow-.

Connect multimeter V.A.G 1526 to camshaft adjustment valve to measure resistance using aux. cables from V.A.G 1594 A.
Specification: 10.0...15.0 ω(at room temperature).

Note:

The resistance figures are valid for approx. 20 °C. At higher temperatures the resistance figures will increase.

If the specification is not attained:

Replace camshaft adjustment valve (N205) => Page
15-49
, item (10).

Interrogate fault memory, if necessary, repair any faults and then erase fault memory:

=> Repair group 01; Fault memory; Interrogating and erasing engine control unit fault memory
4-cyl. injection engine (4-valve, roller rocker finger), Mechanics
Fault memory
Interrogating and erasing engine control unit fault memory

If the specification is obtained:

Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to control unit wiring harness. The engine control unit remains disconnected.

Check wiring between test box and 2-pin connector for open circuit using current flow diagram:
Contact 2 and test box socket (115)
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ω
Additionally check wire for short to vehicle earth and to battery positive.
Specification: ∞ω

Check wire between 2-pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump relay (J17) for open circuit using current flow diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ω

If no fault is detected in the wiring:

Replace engine control unit

=> Repair group 24; Engine control unit; Replacing engine control unit
4-cyl. injection engine (4-valve, roller rocker finger), Mechanics
Engine control unit
Replacing engine control unit

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
