📋 Procedure

Checking automatic headlight range control, headlights with gas discharge bulbs, vehicles up to 04.2011
The headlight range control unit is factory-programmed with corresponding characteristic curves for the following versions:
Vehicles with short wheelbase
Vehicles with long wheelbase
VR6 4MOTION vehicles
Checking automatic headlight range control
Carry out basic setting of headlights

Descriptions of work
.
Load the luggage compartment of the vehicle with approx. 80 to 160 kg (1-2 persons) and observe the reaction of the headlight height setting on the headlight adjustment unit.
The headlights must be dipped until the basic setting is reached again. The reaction time depends on the switch-on time of the headlights and can take up to approx. 1.5 minute.
Switch off dipped beam.
Switch dipped beam on again and check if the headlights are moved automatically to correct height setting.
Approx. 11 seconds after switching on the headlights, the previously displayed zero position should be readjusted.
Unload vehicle again.
After appropriate reaction time, the zero position set in the first place (unloaded vehicle) should be selected again. The reaction time depends on the switch-on time of the headlights and can take up to approx. 1.5 minute.
The vehicle is operational when the automatically adjusted height of the headlights is correct in loaded as well as in unloaded state.
If the automatically adjusted height of the headlight in loaded state (possibly check several loaded states) is incorrect, the headlight range control unit must be specifically initialised for each vehicle.
Initialising headlight range control
Chapter
Notes on programming:
The programmed characteristic curve can be replaced at any time with an individual characteristic curve. However, after the start of the programming procedure, the pre-programmed characteristic curve is definitely cancelled. The
“initialisation tilting”
after
»Light on«
only occurs when a valid characteristic curve has been programmed in the control unit.
If the control unit does not perform this up and down movement immediately after
»Light on«
, the following fault are possible:
Supply voltage not available at control unit (56b at pin 2, earth at pin 1) of 6-pin connector
3-pin connector of positioning motor for headlight range control is not connected
No characteristic curve programmed.
If, despite programmed characteristic curve, the control unit does not dip the headlights, check as follows:
System OK
Initialisation OK
No fault case occurred after 41 seconds waiting time
Then, the signal of the vehicle level sender is not explicit. Reflections or objects under the vehicle may be the cause to it. Check installation position of vehicle level sender and reflection surface under vehicle.
Note
If the reflected signal from vehicle level sender is received but cannot be evaluated, the system freezes the state of the headlight setting until a new explicit signal is reflected. Resetting the system brings the headlight back to zero position. However, a fault case (dipping headlights) does not occur in this case.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
