Calibrating Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) — VW
Calibrating Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) on VW: 24 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Calibrating the adaptive cruise control radar on the VW platform codes listed below is a wheel-alignment-bay job, not a scan-tool job alone. The car goes onto the alignment platform with the testing preconditions for wheel alignment met, a battery charger connected and the diagnostic tester cabled through an open window so every door stays shut and the exterior lights stay off. Quick-release clamps and measurement transducers go on the rear wheels and run-out compensation is done there, so the rear axle sets the reference. The trim in front of the sensor comes off and the lens is cleaned. Setting device VAS 6430/3 with its reflector mirror is placed centrally and parallel at distance (a) from control unit J428, levelled on its spirit levels and adjusted until the laser hits the centre of the lens and the alignment computer reads within tolerance, after which the function is run on the tester.
🧭 Before you start
Select ACC calibration on the wheel alignment computer, drive the car onto the platform, connect a charger and the diagnostic cable through the window, set the front wheels straight and fit clamps and transducers to the rear wheels with run-out compensation. Remove the trim, clean the sensor lens and set up VAS 6430/3 with the mirror centred, parallel and at distance (a) from J428, with the front transducers on the alignment beam. Level the spirit levels with the adjusting screws, aim the laser at the lens centre with the crank handle, turn the fine adjuster until the computer shows within tolerance, recheck, then run the function on the tester.
Fits: platform codes AU1, BX5
- Special tools named: VAS 6430/3
Don't miss
- All doors closed and exterior lighting off for the whole setting procedure.
- Carry out run-out compensation on the rear wheels before positioning the setting device.
- Clean the sensor lens; dirt shifts the laser reference.
- Once VAS 6430 is positioned on the alignment beam it must not be moved.
- The number 2 on the rotary knob must point towards the vehicle.
- If the laser does not meet the lens centre on the recheck, repeat the whole alignment of VAS 6430/3.

📋 Procedure
- Press button to select ACC calibration in wheel alignment computer.
- Note testing preconditions for wheel alignment .
- Drive car onto wheel alignment platform.
- Connect battery charger Electrical system; General information27Charging battery.
- Connect . (Route diagnostic cable through open window.) [Note: During the setting procedure, make sure that all the car doors remain closed and that the car's exterior lighting is switched off.]
- Move front wheels to straight-ahead position.
- Mount quick-release clamps on rear wheels.
- Mount measurement transducers on rear wheels.
- Carry out wheel run-out compensation at rear wheels.
- Remove trim (1).
- Remove trim (1).
- Remove dirt, if there is any, from the sensor lens.
- Position ACC setting deviceVAS 6430/3 centrally and parallel at a distance (a) from centrally fitted ACC reflector mirrorVAS 6430/3 to adaptive cruise control unit J428. [Note: ACC setting deviceVAS 6430 is not allowed to be moved on alignment beam.]
- Mount measurement transducers (1) of front wheels on alignment beam.
- In the area (A), move position (2) on rotary knob so that it coincides with marking on mirror (the number 2 on the rotary knob must point towards the vehicle).
- Use adjusting screws (1), (2) and (3) to bring spirit levels (A) and (B) to VAS 6430/3 horizontal.
- Adjust mirror (4) by means of crank handle (arrow) in such a way that the laser beam contacts the centre of the sensor lens.
- Position the mirror on side of the alignment beam so that the laser beam contacts the centre of the sensor lens.
- Use adjusting screw (1) to level spirit levels (2).
- Turn fine adjuster screw (5) until display on wheel alignment computer is within tolerance.
- Use adjusting screw (1) to level spirit levels (2).
- Now, use laser beam (3) of VAS 6430/3 to check again whether spirit levels are horizontal and laser beam hits centre of sensor lens. [Note: The alignment of VAS 6430/3 must be repeated if the laser beam does not coincide with the sensor lens.]
- Press GoTo button and select Select function/component function.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
