Automatic gearbox 001 — Dismantling and assembling 1st to 3rd gear clutch K1 on VW: 17 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Polo 9N (2001–2009)
- Special tools named: feeler gauge
- Renewed: as necessary
Don't miss
- If wear limit has been reached on a used clutch, the plates must be replaced and the thickness for a new pressure plate must be calculated.
- Before installing a piston, moisten sealing lips and seals with ATF.
- When a piston is installed in a clutch or brake, it must be possible to move it by hand without friction in both direction (arrows).
- The clutch piston must press the plates together.
- Allow compressed air to escape. The set of plates must return to its rest position.
📋 Procedure
- Press piston cap with spring down far enough for retaining ring (arrow) to be inserted in groove.
- Set outer plates (2) and inner plates (4) on dished washer (3).
- Place pressure plate (5) on the last inner plate.
- Insert retaining ring (1) in groove in clutch housing.
- Measure play between pressure plate and retaining ring using a feeler gauge (A).
- If wear limit has been reached on a used clutch, the plates must be replaced and the thickness for a new pressure plate must be calculated.
- Allocate plates and pressure plate according to gearbox code.
- Before installing a piston, moisten sealing lips and seals with ATF.
- Turn piston slightly when installing.
- When a piston is installed in a clutch or brake, it must be possible to move it by hand without friction in both direction (arrows).
- If this problem occurs, remove the piston again.
- Check sealing lips and sealing rings for damage and renew as necessary.
- Reinstall piston and check again.
- Blow compressed air into pressure channel (arrow) with a compressed air gun.
- Hold hole on opposite side closed.
- The clutch piston must press the plates together.
- Allow compressed air to escape. The set of plates must return to its rest position.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
