Assembly overview - sump and oil pump — VW
Assembly overview - sump and oil pump on VW: 9 steps, 1 torque figure, engines CAWB, CBFA, CBZB, CCTA.
This assembly overview covers the sump and oil pump on the small petrol engines used in the Golf VII and Golf VII Variant (5G1, BA5), the Polo 6C and the AM1 platform, with a long list of engine codes from CAWB to CZEA. It is less a strip-down than a set of fitting rules: the sump bolts are tightened in stages in the shown sequence (1 … 9) to 9 Nm, angle-tightened bolts are renewed, and the drain plug arrangement changes after the first oil change. Factory cars have a drain plug with a captive seal, which is thrown away and replaced by a plug with a renewable seal. The connecting union is fitted using two counterlocked nuts, which then come off without disturbing the union.
🧭 Before you start
Use this page when refitting the sump or dealing with the drain plug. Tighten the sump bolts in stages following the sequence (1 … 9) to 9 Nm, renewing any bolt that takes a tightening angle. On the first oil change, scrap the plug with its captive seal and fit a new plug with a renewable seal. Fit the connecting union by locking two nuts against each other, tightening via the nut, then removing both nuts without loosening the union.
Fits: VW Golf VII Variant (BA), VW Polo 6C (2014–2017), VW Golf Sportsvan (AM1, 2014–2020), VW Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020)
- Opens: engine oil
Don't miss
- Tighten the sump bolts in stages in the sequence (1 … 9); do not run one bolt down fully first.
- Renew bolts that are tightened with a specified angle.
- On the first oil change, dispose of the drain plug with captive seal and fit the new plug with renewable seal.
- After that, only the seal needs renewing at each oil change.
- When removing the counterlocked nuts, hold the connecting union so it does not back out.

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |

| 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts in the sequence (1 … 9) |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Tighten bolts in stages in the sequence shown: [Note: Renew bolts that are tightened with specified tightening angle.]
- Tighten bolts in stages in the sequence shown:
- On first oil change, oil drain plug with captive seal (1) is to be disposed of.
- Fit new oil drain plug (3) with renewable seal (2).
- Unscrew oil drain plug (2), and dispose of old seal (3).
- New oil seal (1) can be renewed individually when oil is changed in the future.
- Screw nuts (3) and (4) onto connecting union (2), and counterlock them.
- Tighten connecting union (2) using nut (3).
- Loosen both nuts, and unscrew them. When doing this, take care not to loosen the connecting union.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
