Aligning dash panel in vehicle, Golf 2004 ► — VW
Aligning dash panel in vehicle, Golf 2004 ► on VW: 18 steps, 7 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.
Aligning the dash panel in the car on the Golf from 2004 onwards, platform codes 1K1 (Golf V) and 5K1 (Golf VI). The dash is not removed; its mountings are slackened two to three turns so it can be moved and its height reset on two eccentric bolts. Access means taking off the wiper arms, plenum chamber cover, dash panel end trims and footwell trims. Then the bolt in the plenum chamber, the two bolts under the heating and air-conditioning controls, the four bolts on the tunnel, the nuts on each side and the left fuse holder bolt are all eased off. The eccentrics are the delicate part: in the default position the longer side faces outwards, and they must not go beyond 90° either way.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the bolt at the door opening, the wiper arms, plenum chamber cover, end trims and footwell trims. Loosen the dash mountings two to three turns: plenum chamber bolt, two bolts under the heating controls, four tunnel bolts, the side nuts and the fuse holder bolt. Set the height on the eccentric bolts, slide the dash into position, then tighten every fastener to its specified torque: tunnel bolts 20 Nm, nuts 18 Nm, the bolts under the controls 9 Nm, fuse holder bolt 2 Nm.
Fits: VW Golf V / Jetta (1K, 2003–2009), VW Golf VI (5K, 2008–2013)
Don't miss
- Only loosen the mountings two to three turns; the dash stays in place.
- Do not turn the height eccentrics more than 90° either way from the default position.
- In the default position, the longer surface of each eccentric faces the outside of the car.
- Place a thick cloth on the dash end before closing the door against it.
- Retighten all bolts to spec after aligning: tunnel 20 Nm, side nuts 18 Nm.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 1.5 Nm (1.1 lb-ft) | Unscrew bolt (2 |
| 18 Nm (13 lb-ft) | Loosen the two nuts (4) 2 to 3 turns |
| 18 Nm (13 lb-ft) | On the right side loosen the nut (1) 2 to 3 turns |
| 2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft) | On the left side loosen the fuse holder securing bolt (3 |
| 2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft) | Open door and remove bolt (1 |
| 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) | Loosen the four bolts (2) in the area of the tunnel 2 to 3 turns |
| 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft) | Loosen the two bolts under the heating/air conditioning controls (1) 2 to 3 turns |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Open door and remove bolt (1) (2 Nm). — 2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- Hold a respectively thick cloth on the left side of the dash panel and close the door. [Note: Apply the same procedures for the front passenger side.]
- Remove wiper arms 92.
- Remove plenum chamber cover 64.
- Remove dash panel end trim .
- Prise cover (1) out of mounting using removal wedge3409.
- Unclip cover (1) from trim using a small screwdriver.
- Unscrew bolt (2) (1.5 Nm). — 1.5 Nm (1.1 lb-ft)
- Pull left footwell trim (3) out of mountings. [Note: Removal of right footwell trim is identical.]
- Loosen bolt (1) in plenum chamber by 2 to 3 turns.
- Loosen the two bolts under the heating/air conditioning controls (1) 2 to 3 turns (9 Nm). [Note: Other bolts in this area need not be loosened.] — 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft)
- Loosen the four bolts (2) in the area of the tunnel 2 to 3 turns (20 Nm). — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- On the right side loosen the nut (1) 2 to 3 turns (18 Nm). — 18 Nm (13 lb-ft)
- On the left side loosen the fuse holder securing bolt (3) (2 Nm). — 2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- Loosen the two nuts (4) 2 to 3 turns (18 Nm). [Note: The height of the dash panel is set using eccentric bolts (2) and (5).In the default position, the longer surface of the eccentric faces the outside of the vehicle. The eccentric must not be turned further than ±90° from the default position.] — 18 Nm (13 lb-ft)
- Set the required height of the dash panel using eccentric bolts (2) and (5).
- Slide dash panel to desired position.
- After aligning in vehicle, tighten dash panel bolts to specified torque.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
