Adjusting selector forks on VW: factory workshop procedure. Full factory text, tools and checks.
Workshop procedure for VW — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
Selector forks can only be adjusted correctly with the selector fork setting tool VW 294a. As the selector fork adjustment for the 1st and 2nd gears changes as well as for the reverse gear, when adjusting the input gear =>page
34-150
, the adjustment of these selector forks must be checked and the nuts for the input gear and the drive pinion tightened to the prescribed tightening torque. There must be no paper gasket between the intermediate block and the distance pin.

Secure retaining ring for angular contact ball bearing. To do this tighten two bolts facing each other diagonally to 5 kgm.
Place the crank of the setting tool to the drive pinion toothing as shown so that the crank lies against the plate and the drive pinion does not turn. Continuously select 1st and 2nd gear.
Tighten hexagon nuts for drive pinion to 16 kgm with a torque wrench. Loosen nuts again and tighten finally to 6 kgm.
Tighten hexagon nut for input gear to 6 kgm.
Install interior gear lever housing. When installing the interior gear lever housing the roller bearing (radial bearing) for drive pinion fits correctly in the intermediate block.
Adjust selector forks for 1st/2nd and for 3rd/4th gears so that they run freely in the locking collar groove when selecting the different gears or when running at idling speed.
Adjust the selector fork for reverse gear so that the output gear is standing centrally between the locking collar and the synchromeshed gear wheel for 2nd gear on the drive pinion when the second gear is selected, and when the reverse gear is selected it is engaging correctly into the synchromeshed gear wheel for reverse gear on the input gear.
Tighten locking bolts for selector forks to 2.5 kgm with a torque wrench and a hexagon socket AF 11 mm. Tighten hexagon bolt for reversing lever guide to 2 kgm.
Remove interior gear lever housing =>Page . Take manual gearbox out of the setting tool.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
