Timing chain replacement: Toyota Yaris 2011 (1NR-FE)

Step-by-step timing chain replacement for the Toyota Yaris 2011 (1NR-FE): 116 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Timing chain replacement on the 2011 Toyota Yaris with the 1.33 16V 1NR-FE engine. The front of the engine comes apart in layers: the inlet manifold, EGR valve and pipe, fuel rail with injectors, ignition coils, valve cover, water inlet and the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors are removed, then the crankshaft pulley is held with the special tool while its centre bolt is undone. With the right-hand engine support bracket off, the timing chain cover comes away. The chain is renewed, and timing is set by the painted links on the chain lining up with the marks on the camshaft gearwheels. The other make-or-break point is the tensioner: plunger pushed in and locked with a pin, and the crankshaft positioned at 20° ATDC and then turned back as described.

116 steps 1 engine code

🧭 Before you start

Remove the intake, EGR, fuel rail, ignition and sensor parts, the valve cover and the crankshaft pulley, then the engine support bracket and timing chain cover. Remove the tensioner, guides and chain, and discard the crankshaft oil seal. Fit the new chain with the painted links on the gearwheel marks, refit the guides and the pinned tensioner, then check the chain on its guide rail. Apply sealant, align the oil pump, refit the cover following the tightening sequence, and rebuild with new gaskets and O-rings.

Fits: platform codes 1.33, 16V

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Special tools named: locking pin
  • Renewed: timing chain

Don't miss

  • Always renew the timing chain on this engine.
  • The painted links must align with the camshaft gearwheel marks; check again before the cover goes on.
  • Push the tensioner plunger fully in and lock it with a pin before fitting.
  • Discard the crankshaft oil seal, renew gaskets and O-rings, and apply sealant to the cover.
  • Align the oil pump with the crankshaft before fitting the chain cover, and follow the bolt sequence.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
