Cylinder head removal & torque: Toyota Previa (1CD-FTV)
Step-by-step cylinder head removal & torque for the Toyota Previa (1CD-FTV): 47 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This is cylinder head removal on the Toyota Previa 2.0 D4-D with the 1CD-FTV common-rail diesel. The timing belt has to come off first, followed by the air filter housing and hose, wiring, heater hose and the oil cooler connection. The turbocharger is unbolted from the exhaust manifold after its oil lines are disconnected, then the camshaft gearwheel, vacuum pump and camshaft cover are removed. The injector lines and injector nozzles come out next, the camshaft sealing ring retainer and camshafts are lifted out, and finally the head itself. The job stands or falls on careful checking afterwards: the head and block faces for damage, and each head bolt against its minimum outer diameter before it is reused, with the tightening done to the specified head torque procedure.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the timing belt, intake and air filter housing, then disconnect wiring, heater hose and the oil cooler. Free the turbocharger oil lines and remove the turbo, the camshaft gearwheel, vacuum pump and camshaft cover. Take out the injector lines and nozzles, the camshaft seal retainer and the camshafts, then lift off the cylinder head. Before refitting, inspect the head and block and measure the head bolts, then reassemble using the specified torque settings for the head, fuel lines, turbo, crankshaft pulley and camshaft gearwheel.
Fits: platform codes 2.0, D4-D
Don't miss
- Measure every cylinder head bolt against the minimum outer diameter; any bolt that has necked down is renewed.
- Inspect the cylinder head and engine block faces for damage before the new gasket goes on.
- Cap the injector line ports and injector bores as soon as they are opened; dirt in a common-rail system ruins injectors.
- Disconnect the turbo oil lines before unbolting the turbo, and refit them clean so oil supply is not restricted.
- Tighten the head to the specified sequence and stages from the torque settings, not from memory.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
