Timing belt replacement: Toyota Corolla97-00 (7A-FE)

Step-by-step timing belt replacement for the Toyota Corolla97-00 (7A-FE): 54 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Timing belt replacement on the 97–00 generation Corolla 1.8 16V with the 7A-FE engine uses a spring-loaded tensioner that is set by deflection rather than a pointer. The spark plugs are removed so the engine turns easily, the coolant pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley centre bolt come off with the special holding tools, and the timing belt covers are taken off. The tensioner pulley is pushed away from the belt and tightened in that position, the belt removed, and the tensioner and idler pulleys checked, including the free length of the tensioner spring. A new belt goes on with the marks aligned, the tensioner is released and retightened, and tension is confirmed by measuring deflection. Measurements outside the specified range mean renewing the part.

54 steps 1 engine code

🧭 Before you start

Remove the spark plugs, coolant pump pulley, crankshaft pulley bolt and timing belt covers. Push the tensioner away from the belt, lock it and remove the belt. Inspect the tensioner and idler pulleys and measure the spring free length. Fit a new belt, release and tighten the tensioner, check deflection, then refit the covers, valve cover, spark plugs and battery earth cable.

Fits: platform codes 1.8, 16V

Don't miss

  • Always fit a new timing belt once the old one is off.
  • Measure the tensioner spring free length and renew it if out of range.
  • Check tension by belt deflection after the tensioner has been tightened.
  • Use the special tools to hold the crankshaft pulley when undoing its centre bolt.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
