Astra G Z12XE — OPEL / VAUXHALL

Astra G Z12XE on Opel / Vauxhall: 212 steps, engines Z12XE. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Timing chain renewal on the Astra G 1.2 16V with the Z12XE engine. It is one of the longer chain jobs: the oil and coolant are drained, the sump, oil filter, oxygen sensor and catalytic converter come off, and the alternator, air-conditioning compressor (left connected), thermostat housing, coolant pump, ignition module and wiring loom are cleared. The engine is held on a support while the right-hand engine support and bracket are removed. Camshaft alignment and adjustment tools lock the timing at TDC for cylinder 1, the chain tensioner is locked with a pin and the old chain and rails come out. Check the special tools fit after 2 crankshaft rotations before the cover is sealed.

212 steps 1 engine code

🧭 Before you start

Drain oil and coolant, remove the sump, catalytic converter, ancillary belt and tensioner, alternator, coolant pump and ignition module, and support the engine to remove the right-hand mounting. Set TDC for cylinder 1, fit the camshaft alignment tools, lock the tensioner, remove the cover, rails and chain. Fit the new chain and rails, release the tensioner slowly, turn the engine 2 rotations, confirm the tools fit, then seal and rebuild.

Fits: platform codes 1.2, 16V

  • Opens: coolant, engine oil
  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Special tools named: locking pin
  • Renewed: bolt, seal exhaust

Don't miss

  • Always renew the timing chain.
  • Lock the chain tensioner with a locking pin before removal, and release it slowly on refit.
  • Mark the ancillary belt's direction of rotation and refit it running the same way.
  • Turn the crankshaft two rotations by hand and confirm the special tools still fit.
  • Renew the bolt where indicated, and apply sealant to the timing cover and sump.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
