W204 petrol 716.6 gearbox — MERCEDES-BENZ
W204 petrol 716.6 gearbox on Mercedes-Benz: 51 steps, engines 271.820, 271.860, 271.910, 271.950. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Manual gearbox removal for the 716.6 in petrol W204 C-Class saloons, estates and coupes, with the 271 and 272 engines listed. The car is supported at the front, the lower engine covers come off and the front exhaust pipe with its catalytic converter is removed. The clutch hydraulic line is disconnected at the slave cylinder and the lines plugged, the propeller shaft is marked and separated from the gearbox, and the reversing light switch, neutral position sensor, shift rod and earth cable are disconnected. With the engine and gearbox supported, the rear cross member and the engine-to-gearbox bolts come out and the gearbox is lowered. On refit the clutch circuit has to be bled with a brake fluid replacement unit.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the lower covers, front exhaust and catalytic converter, then disconnect the clutch line, sensors, shift rod, earth cable and propeller shaft. Support engine and gearbox, remove the rear cross member and the engine-to-gearbox bolts and lower the gearbox out. Refit in reverse, bleed the hydraulic clutch circuit and check the gearbox fluid level.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
