F10 - N47 V-belt — BMW

F10 - N47 V-belt on BMW: 19 steps, engines N47D20C, N47D20D. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Renewing the auxiliary drive belt on the BMW F10 520d and 525d (including xDrive) with the N47D20C or N47D20D engine. The belt is buried behind several covers, so the upper engine cover, air pipe, air duct, inlet silencer, acoustic cover and front cover all come off first, and the starter motor connections are disconnected. The lower engine cover is removed to reach the tensioner. The tensioner pulley is turned clockwise until the locking pin can be fitted, which holds it off the belt, and the belt is lifted off. Fitting the new one is the reverse, with the pin removed last once the belt is correctly on every pulley. The direction of rotation and the routing around the pulleys are the two things to get right.

19 steps 2 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Switch the ignition off and remove the covers, air pipe, duct and inlet silencer to reach the front of the engine, then the lower cover. Turn the tensioner clockwise, lock it with the pin and remove the belt. Fit the new belt around all pulleys, remove the locking pin and refit the covers and air ducting.

Fits: platform codes 520D, |, -XDRIVE, 525D

  • Special tools named: locking pin

Don't miss

  • Mark the belt's direction of rotation before removing it if it will be reused.
  • Turn the tensioner clockwise only until the locking pin fits, then lock it.
  • Check the belt sits correctly in every pulley groove before releasing the tensioner.
  • Remove the locking pin last, once the belt is fully routed.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
