E60/61 GS6-37DZ M47 gearbox — BMW
E60/61 GS6-37DZ M47 gearbox on BMW: 49 steps, engines M47D20T2, N47D20C. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This covers taking the GS6-37DZ six-speed manual gearbox out of an E60/61 520d with the M47D20T2 or N47D20C diesel. It is a classic rear-drive gearbox drop: the reinforcement plate, complete exhaust, catalytic converter and its mounting bracket come off first, then the gearbox is supported on the special tool with safety straps fitted before the cross member is removed. The propeller shaft is disconnected at the gearbox, the centre bearing freed and the shaft lowered out. The gear-shift control and clutch slave cylinder are taken off, the flywheel inspection cover removed, and the bell housing bolts undone so the gearbox can be drawn back. Secure support of the gearbox and an untouched clutch hydraulic circuit are what keep the job straightforward.
🧭 Before you start
Underneath, remove the reinforcement plate, exhaust and catalytic converter with its bracket. Support the gearbox with the special tool and safety straps, disconnect and remove the propeller shaft with its centre support, then take out the cross member. Unbolt the gear-shift control and the clutch slave cylinder without opening the hydraulics, remove the flywheel inspection cover and the hexagonal and Torx bell housing bolts, and lower the gearbox. Installation is the reverse, followed by refilling the gearbox oil.
Fits: platform code 520D
- Opens: gearbox oil
Don't miss
- Safety straps must be on the gearbox support before the cross member comes out.
- Leave the clutch hydraulic lines connected; hang the slave cylinder aside instead of opening the system.
- Check both centring dowels between engine and gearbox are still in place before offering the gearbox back up.
- Apply grease to the input shaft splines before refitting the gearbox.
- Take care not to damage the rubber boot when removing the propeller shaft and cross member.
- Refill the gearbox after installation; it is easily forgotten once everything is bolted up.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
