Notes:
The altitude sender cannot be tested using workshop tools. Only the power supply is checked.
Only carry out following test when the corresponding fault is displayed during interrogation of fault memory.
Test sequence
Switch ignition off.
Remove the lower part of the right A pillar trim and the front door sill panel tread strip
Pull back floor covering at front of right footwell. (If necessary, cut open the perforated seam on the left with a knife.)
Unscrew bolts -arrows- for electronics box cover.
Carefully detach upper and lower sections of cover.
Pull out cross strut -arrow 3- with attached parts.
Unplug connector at altitude sender -arrow 2-.
Connect multimeter as follows to measure voltage.
Connector / Contact · Measure to
1 · Engine earth
Switch the ignition on.
Specification: approx. 5 V
If specification is not attained:
With the ignition switched off, use adapter V.A.G 1598/3 to connect test box V.A.G 1598 A only to connector of KE III Jetronic control unit (control unit remains disconnected) => Page
25-16
.
Check for open circuit and short to positive or earth in the following wiring connection:
Connector / Contact · Test box V.A.G 1598 A / Socket
1 · 25
Rectify any open/short circuit as necessary.
=> "Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault-finding and Fitting Locations" binder
If the wiring is OK:
Replace KE III Jetronic control unit
=>Page

.
If specification is attained:
Switch the ignition on.
Connect multimeter as follows to measure voltage.
Connector / Contact · Specification
1 + 3 · 4.5...5.0 V
2 + 3 · 4.5...5.0 V
If the specifications are not obtained:
Eliminate open circuit or short circuit using the current flow diagram.
If specifications are attained:
With the ignition switched off, use adapter V.A.G 1598/2 to connect test box V.A.G 1598 A only to connector of VEZ control unit (control unit remains disconnected) => Page
25-16
.
Check for open circuit and short to positive or earth in the following wiring connections:
Connector / Contact · Test box V.A.G 1598 A / Socket
1 · 2
2 · 21
Rectify any open/short circuit as necessary.
=> "Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault-finding and Fitting Locations" binder
If no wiring fault is detected:
Replace altitude sender.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
