Testing signal from air conditioner compressor

Note:

In vehicles ▸ 05.94 the pre-control value for idling speed stabilisation is increased by the signal from the air conditioner so that the idling speed stabilisation remains in the middle of the control range.

The LED should light up.

If the LED does not light up:

Disconnect V.A.G 1598/11 adapter from engine control unit connection B.

If the LED then lights up:

Replace engine control unit => Page

.

If LED still does not light:

Check for open circuit and short to positive or earth in the following wiring connections:

Test box / V.A.G 1598 A / socket · Switch forair conditioner - E30 / / contact · Operating and / display unit / -E87 / contact

Checking the air conditioner compressor shutoff

Note:

The air conditioner compressor is shut off by the engine control unit on accelerating from standstill and from low vehicle speed for approx. 12 seconds. If the accelerator pedal is released sooner, the time is reduced to min. 3 seconds.

Test requirements:

Vehicle at ambient temperature (warmer than + 15 oC)
Vehicles with automatic gearbox: Selector lever in position P or N
No faults stored in fault memory
Air conditioner system OK
Engine running at idling speed

Test sequence

Switch on air conditioner system:
Manually controlled air conditioners: Press the "A/C" button.
Fully automatic air conditioners: Press the "AUTO" button, set the temperature to "LO" and the blower speed to "HI".

Briefly apply full throttle - the engine must reach its maximum speed.
Air conditioner compressor must stop for a few seconds (visual inspection)

If the air conditioner compressor is not switched off:

With the ignition switched off, use adapter V.A.G 1598/11 to connect test box V.A.G 1598 A to connector B only of engine control unit (control unit remains disconnected) => Page
24-10
.
Check for open circuit and short to positive or earth in the following wiring connections:

Test box / V.A.G 1598 A / socket · Control unit for magnetic coupling -J153 / contact · Operating and / display unit / -E87 / contact
21 · => "Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault Finding and Fitting Locations" binder

If there are no faults in the wiring, check the operation of air conditioner.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
