Renewing crankshaft oil seal: Audi A3 (AUA, BAD, BAG, BBY, …)

Step-by-step renewing crankshaft oil seal for the Audi A3: 16 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Renewing the front crankshaft oil seal on the petrol engines listed below, under platform code 8P and its related variants, is done in the car from the right-hand side. The centre and right noise insulation come out, the belt tensioner is turned and locked with a 4 mm Allen key and the poly V-belt removed, after marking its direction of rotation. The crankshaft pulley is removed with T10172 and T10172/2 as a counterhold. The old seal is pulled with extractor 3203, screwed hard into the seal and then drawn out by turning the inner part. The new seal goes on dry over guide sleeve T10117/2 and is driven home with T10117. A dry, clean sealing surface and an unchanged belt direction decide the job.

🧭 Before you start

Remove the centre and right noise insulation, mark the belt's running direction, lock the tensioner with a 4 mm Allen key and remove the belt and crankshaft pulley. Set the oil seal extractor, screw it firmly into the seal and draw the seal out, then clean the running and sealing surfaces. Slide the new seal over the guide sleeve, remove the sleeve and drive the seal in to the stop. Refit the pulley and belt in its original running direction.

Fits: Audi A3 (8P, 2003–2012)

  • Special tools named: T10172/2

Don't miss

  • Mark the poly V-belt's direction of rotation; refitting it reversed can cause breakage.
  • Lock the tensioner with a 4 mm Allen key before removing the belt.
  • Fit the new seal dry: do not lubricate the sealing lip or outer rim.
  • Use guide sleeve T10117/2 and drive the seal in squarely to the stop.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
