Removing gearbox, 4x2 vehicles with rear-wheel drive — AUDI
Removing gearbox, 4x2 vehicles with rear-wheel drive on Audi: 36 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This is gearbox removal on rear-wheel-drive 4x2 vehicles with the platform codes listed below (S1, 2H), an automatic with torque converter and a two-piece propshaft. Air filter housing, guard and starter come off first, and the engine mounting goes back in once the starter is out so the engine cannot tip. The propshaft is marked against the output flange, unbolted, pushed back on its centre bearing and tied up; the selector cable is popped off its ball head, the particulate filter and its bracket removed, and the torque converter bolts undone by turning the crankshaft in its running direction. ATF lines are disconnected and plugged, the engine supported, and the carrier lowered on a jack. Success depends on marking the propshaft and keeping the converter in the gearbox as it comes back.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the air filter housing, guard and starter, then refit the engine mounting. Mark and detach the propshaft, release the selector cable and wiring, and remove the particulate filter and bracket. Undo the converter bolts and ATF lines, support the engine and lower the gearbox carrier. With a second mechanic, take out the remaining bell housing bolts, push the converter towards the gearbox as it is pressed off the dowels, lower it and fit the support bridge.
Fits: platform codes S1, 2H
- Renewed: o-rings
Don't miss
- Refit the engine mounting after removing the starter, otherwise the engine may tip.
- Mark propshaft and output flange if no coloured spot is present.
- Do not loosen the bolt on the selector lever cable or the mechanism needs readjusting.
- Turn the crankshaft only in its normal direction of rotation to reach converter bolts.
- Renew the ATF line O-rings and plug open lines with clean bungs.
- Secure the torque converter with support bridge 30 - 211 A once the gearbox is out.

📋 Procedure
- If necessary, remove air filter housing 23Air filter; Removing and installing air filter housing.
- Raise vehicle 11.
- If fitted, remove engine/gearbox guard General body repairs, exterior66Engine/gearbox guard; Removing and installing engine/gearbox guard.
- Remove starter Electrical system27Starter; Removing and installing starter.
- Reinstall engine mounting after the starter has been removed. Otherwise the engine may tip over during subsequent repair work.
- Check whether a mark (coloured spot) is present on propshaft and on output flange.
- If there is no such mark (arrow), mark position of output flange relative to propshaft with a coloured spot.
- Unscrew bolts (3) of propshaft (1), and remove propshaft from flange (2). [Note: Apply the parking brake when loosening the securing bolts of the propshaft.] [Note: It is not necessary to remove the rear propshaft completely.]
- Loosen nuts of centre bearing, and push propshaft with centre bearing to stop towards rear.
- Tie up propshaft (1) at a suitable location using wire (arrow).
- Unlock connector (arrow) by turning it anti-clockwise in (direction of arrow).
- Unclip wiring harness from gearbox (1)(arrows) and lay to side.
- ⚠ Do not loosen the bolt on the selector lever cable. Otherwise the selector mechanism must be readjusted. — Pull securing clip (arrow) in (direction of arrow) off selector lever cable (1) and out of guide.
- Press selector lever cable on ball head (arrow) off gearbox using removal lever80-200. Then pull cable (1) in (direction of arrow) out of guide and lay to side.
- Remove diesel particulate filter 26Emission control; Removing and installing particulate filter.
- Remove particulate filter bracket (1) from gearbox. To do this, unscrew bolts (arrows).
- Turn crankshaft (1) using an offset ring spanner (arrow) until the torque converter bolts are accessible. [Note: Only turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation (direction of arrow).Counterhold crankshaft with ring spanner when loosening torque converter. The torque converter is secured with three bolts. Therefore turn crankshaft by 120° to access the bolts one after another.]
- Unscrew bolts (arrow) from torque converter (1). [Note: Catch oil which runs out. Seal ATF lines and gearbox using clean plugs from engine bung setVAS 6122.]
- Unscrew bolt (1) for ATF lines (arrows) from gearbox and disconnect ATF lines. [Note: Renew the O-rings when installing the ATF lines (arrows).]
- Unscrew securing bolt (arrow) for ATF lines (1).
- Unscrew bolt securing ATF double line (1) from bracket (2) and lay line together with clamp (arrow) to side.
- Secure adapter2024 A/1 on subframe with fitting tool3046.
- Secure engine support T50015 and preload it slightly.
- Remove securing bolts for gearbox mounting (arrows).
- Place engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A or engine and gearbox jackVAS 6931 under gearbox carrier.
- Remove securing bolts for gearbox carrier (1).
- Lower gearbox carrier with engine and gearbox jack and remove.
- Remove bolts (3), and tie up cable retainer (2).
- Pull off gearbox breather hose (1), and tie it up.
- Unscrew engine/gearbox securing bolts (3, 7, 8, 9). [Note: The engine/gearbox securing bolts (1, 2, 4, 5) have already been unscrewed.]
- Position engine and gearbox jack with a soft foam surface (A) under gearbox (1), and also secure gearbox using a tensioning strap T10038.
- Unscrew remaining engine/gearbox securing bolts (10 and 6). [Note: Only remove the gearbox with the help of a second mechanic.]
- Press gearbox off engine (dowel sleeves) and pull out to rear. [Note: When pulling out the gearbox, push the torque converter towards the gearbox.]
- Using engine and gearbox jack carefully lower gearbox (1) between gearbox carrier (arrow).
- Use support bridge30 - 211 A to secure torque converter in gearbox and prevent it falling out.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
