Removing cylinder head - vehicles with small engine support — AUDI
Removing cylinder head - vehicles with small engine support on Audi: 125 steps, engines AZV, BKD, BLS, BMM.
Removing the cylinder head on the Audi A3 (8P, 2003–2012) with the unit injector TDI engines AZV, BKD, BLS, BMM, BMN and BUY, on cars with the small engine support, is a long strip-down with the engine hung on a support bracket. The particulate filter, battery and tray, air cleaner, air pipes, coolant hoses, fuel lines, selector cables, oil supply lines, unit injector harness and glow plug connector rail all come off first. With the engine held on spindles, the engine mounting and engine support are removed, the crankshaft turned to TDC and the camshaft hub and crankshaft sprocket locked so the toothed belt can be taken off without losing timing. The fuel can be as hot as 100 °C, so let it cool before opening lines, and plug every open port.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the particulate filter, battery, air cleaner and the hoses, lines and wiring around the head. Support the engine on the bracket, remove the engine mounting and engine support, set TDC and lock the hub and crankshaft sprocket. Release the tensioner, take off the toothed belt, remove the camshaft sprocket, hub, Hall sender and cylinder head cover, then loosen the head bolts in sequence and lift the head off with a second mechanic.
Fits: Audi A3 (8P, 2003–2012)
- Opens: fuel
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: puller
Don't miss
- Let fuel cool before opening lines; it can reach 100 °C. Wear gloves and goggles.
- Plug all open pipes and connections immediately with clean bungs from VAS 6122.
- Turn the engine only at the crankshaft and only clockwise when setting TDC.
- Mark the toothed belt direction of rotation before taking it off.
- Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the prescribed sequence, never at random.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
