Removing bevel box - vehicles with 2.0 ltr. TDI engine (TL4) — AUDI

Removing bevel box - vehicles with 2.0 ltr. TDI engine (TL4) on Audi: 31 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Removing the bevel box (transfer case) on the Audi Q3 (8U, 2011–2018) and the related 84 code with the 2.0 TDI engine is done from below on the right side. The wheel and noise insulation come off, the particulate filter brackets are released and the filter is tied back, and the oil pan panel and G266 wiring are moved aside. The right anti-roll bar link and swivel joint are freed, the right drive shaft is removed and the strut is swung outwards on support 2024A/1. The propshaft's flexible coupling is marked and unbolted, the engine is pushed forward via the pendulum support, and the propshaft is detached. Two points decide it: protecting the propshaft flange seal, and loosening the lower bevel box bolts only to dimension (a) before puller T10472 and VW 771 are used.

31 steps

🧭 Before you start

Strip the right front corner: wheel, noise insulation, particulate filter brackets, oil pan panel, anti-roll bar link, swivel joint and drive shaft, then swing the strut out and support it. Mark and unbolt the propshaft flexible coupling, shift the engine forward and push the propshaft rearwards and to the right. Remove the turbocharger support and bevel box bracket, take out the top bolts and slacken the bottom ones to dimension (a). Pull the bevel box off with T10472 and VW 771, then remove the bottom bolts and the unit.

Fits: Audi Q3 (8U, 2011–2018); platform code 84

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Special tools named: locking pin, puller

Don't miss

  • Secure the strut support with retaining clip and nut; an unsecured support is an accident risk.
  • Mark the flexible coupling against the bevel box flange before unbolting.
  • A damaged propshaft flange seal means the propshaft must be renewed.
  • Slacken the lower bevel box bolts only to dimension (a) before using the puller.
  • Do not damage the drive shaft surface coating.

  2. Remove bolt (arrow) on upper bracket for particulate filter.
  3. Tie up particulate filter towards rear.
  4. Loosen fasteners (arrows) and remove noise insulation panel (1) for oil pan.
  5. Unplug electrical connector (1) at oil level and oil temperature sender G266.
  6. Unclip bracket (2) for electrical wiring leading to oil level and oil temperature sender G266 at subframe.
  7. Unscrew nut (arrow) for coupling rod on anti-roll bar (right-side).
  8. If fitted, unscrew nut for bracket for front right vehicle level sender G289.
  9. Remove nuts (arrows) securing swivel joint (right-side).
  10. Disengage swivel joint (right-side) from wishbone.
  11. Remove drive shaft (right-side) Running gear, axles, steering40Drive shaft; Removing and installing drive shaft. [Note: Make sure you do not damage surface coating on drive shaft.]
  12. Swivel suspension strut (right-side) outwards and support with extension 2024A/1, as shown in illustration.
  13. ⚠ Risk of accident if parts of support are not properly secured.Secure locking pin and swivel joint with retaining clip (arrow) and nut (1). — Mark position of flexible coupling relative to bevel box flange for re-installation.
  14. Remove bolts (arrows) securing flexible coupling of propshaft to bevel box (counterhold triangular flange with suitable lever).
  15. Remove bolt (1) for pendulum support and push engine/gearbox assembly forwards (arrow) until it is possible to re-install bolt.
  16. Detach propshaft from bevel box. [Note: If seal is damaged propshaft must be renewed.] [Note: Place a cloth underneath to catch escaping engine oil.]
  17. ⚠ The seal (arrow) in the propshaft flange can be damaged.Push propshaft towards the rear and to the right side of the vehicle as far as possible. — Remove banjo bolt (4) and bolts (1 and 2) and detach support (3) for turbocharger.
  18. Remove bolts ((arrows 1 and 2)).
  19. Press bracket for bevel box (1) downwards in direction of (arrow A) at actuator (2) for exhaust gas recirculation cooler, and detach bracket by turning slightly (arrow B).
  20. Remove top bolts (arrows) securing bevel box to gearbox. [Note: Use a jointed socket wrench (2) to unscrew bolts at top right.]
  21. Loosen bottom bolts (arrows) securing bevel box to gearbox: unscrew only as far as dimension (a). [Note: This prevents the gearbox from dropping out when it is slackened with multi-purpose toolVW 771.]
  22. Attach puller T10472 to bevel box, as shown in illustration.
  23. Prepare multi-purpose toolVW 771 with a washer (a) and 2 sleeves from engine and gearbox support supplementVW 540/1 B, as shown in illustration.
  24. Secure multi-purpose toolVW 771 to puller T10472 and detach bevel box from gearbox.
  25. Remove multi-purpose tool and puller.
  26. Remove bottom bolts and remove bevel box.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
