Removing and installing trim strip for side window: Audi A8 D4

Step-by-step removing and installing trim strip for side window for the Audi A8 D4: 12 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

On the Audi A8 D4 (platform 4H) the trim strip for the side window sits along the rear door frame and locks into the roof trim strip, so the two have to move together. With both doors open, the C-pillar side window trim comes off first, then the roof trim strip is pressed off its clips from the A-pillar back with a removal wedge and pulled free around the rear side window. The side window strip itself is released by sliding it forwards with the roof strip. What decides the job is the rubber strip at the bottom corner: it must be tucked behind the trim strip before anything slides, or it tears and has to be renewed. Mask the paint and use a helper to hold the long roof strip.

12 steps

🧭 Before you start

Open the front and rear doors, remove the C-pillar trim and release the roof trim strip from its clips with a wedge. Mask the paint, lift the bottom corner so the rubber strip goes behind the trim, then slide the side window strip forwards with the roof strip to free it. Refitting uses tyre assembly paste and a pull thread run behind the clips, pulled out slowly while the strip is pressed home until it clicks.

Fits: Audi A8 D4 (4H, 2010–2017)

  • Special tools named: V.A.G 1818

Don't miss

  • Get the rubber strip behind the trim strip before sliding it forwards; a torn rubber strip must be renewed.
  • Mask the paint around the trim with adhesive tape before levering anything.
  • Have a second person support the roof trim strip so it does not mark the paintwork.
  • On refitting, coat rubber and trim strip with tyre assembly paste and pull the thread out slowly while pressing.
  • Listen for each clip engaging audibly; a strip that only looks seated will lift at speed.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
